Question Gutter Guard Grill

Ok, I read the FAQ but have a question. To do the grill, do you have to cut away the old one around the black piece? I don't understand how this is supposed to work. If you don't cut like the instructions say, it looks awful as you can see the old grill behind it not to mention that it's very difficult to put back on...

I'm sure I'm missing something here, can someone help? My grill is in pieces on my back porch as I'm trying to figure this out. I did a search on "gutter guard" and came up with everything BUT help for installing the grill.

If anyone has a REAL close up of the grill for reference that'd be great too!

Thanks!

Jason

if you do it like most of us did, you do not cut the black plastic piece. You just sandwich the grill in between the chrome and the black piece. It is kinda difficult but take your time and it will work.

IM me at PhiTL if you have questions.

OK, I did it with the old grill behind it. I am just not happy with the results in person, up close. it looks a lot better in pictures... here it is.

Honestly, with taking time out to post, the whole thing took about 8 minutes. I'm going to do it again and see if I like it any better. I guess the fact is was SOOOOO easy is what threw me off.

Anyone have any thoughts on how it came out?

Did you get the hinged one? The one you got seems like it came in a roll. The hinged one has a little more body to it and it shows less. Up close you will definately see though it, with the holes and all.

yeah, it came in a roll. I'm going to go see about the other kind tomorrow. It doesn't look THAT bad, but it could definitely look better. I've never seen one up close before so I didn't know what to expect.

Yeah, look for the 'hinged gutter guard'. Just be aware that the hinged one is thicker and harder to work with. Just a word of advice.

Here is another shot. I did mine yesterday. I heard someone say you could but another "shield" on top of the black plastic grill.

I went to Home Depot yesterday and they had the hinged one, but I didn't want to get it b/c it was in silver, but I will probably pick it up and get some black paint, what kinda paint should I buy, anything special? I know there is alot of heat coming from the engine. Mine doesn't look too good either upclose but from far or in a pic it looks ok. I still haven't taken a pic yet, even though the digi camera is in the car, but the weather has been S hit lately.

Is this close enough? Try using some strings to hold the gutter grill in place before you start to screw the assembly back.

I think he meant any strings; like kite string to hold the gutter screen in place. It kind of moves around when you try to put it back together. I did not use it. I just used the silver grill (inside portion) as a cutout template. Make sure to cut to the out part of the grill so it's not cut too small.

That grill looks awesome. I have been thinking if I should try this or not, but I was afraid that the material that you get at home depot was too flexible. But yours looks like it may be more stiff.

I put a black plastic gutter guard on the grille.... it was thicker, a little more tough to put on, like PhiTL said, you can see thru it, but in pics and at night you can't really see behind it..

Yep, that's what I meant. Shoe-string will also work to just hold it in place while you screw the pieces back. Just tie the grill lightly to the black plastic grill. The real pita for me was getting it back over that middle section where the emblem is screwed to. That bulge has got to be taken into consideration when cutting the material or the grill will come out too small (which happened in my first attempt). PhiTL was the one that suggested the hinged gutter guard from Home Depot. It comes in a 5-pack and that's what I'm using. Pretty stiff material.

That does look great; I think I may redo my grill if it gets pushed in.
What did you do for the emblem? Is it a stick on type?

Use the original emblem. In fact, put that back on first to help hold the grill in place.

Ok, went to the hardware store and saw the other type of guard and it was the same stuff except it had a lip on the sides making it seem stronger. I decided to go against it. When I redid it I was much happier with the results. The only part I don't like is where the Acura logo sticks out, but that's normal though.

Here are the finished pics, I would've taken pics from further away, but it's raining out and my car's clean.

If you don't want to see the black grill behind, buy a piece of aluminum storm door net and put it behind the gutter guard. It looks good and you don't see the black sh*t behind it. Check the pictures:

Click on Car and you will see the pics.

to continue the string of seemingly stupid questions, how exactly do you mount both the normal acura logo AND the logo w/ wings onto the gutter grill?

The logo and the wings are 2 separate pieces. Just screw them back on over the gutter grill (might have to cut little holes in the grill for the screws).

I'm personally not fond of the wings. Somewhat reminds me of the Chrysler emblem. Acura/Honda need to have a more distinctive grill like the bimmers and benzs.

just finished my friend's today (again!)

he decided he didn't want to see the grill behind the Acura logo... what a pain in the a$$, but it came out really nice. Local guys will see it at the Park Ave meet on the 9th.

Funny how things change with time. I remember when a user twinkey99 posted his gutter guard grill first almost a couple of years ago and people bashed for looking like a Lincoln! Now everybody likes em...
