Gas octane ratings - switching can be fun???

Every once in a while I'll run a tank of 87 octane in the car and notice a few things:

1. Early on (first 1/8 tank) I have surging accelerating like the computer is trying to adjust for the new lower octane.
2. By 1/4-1/2 tank my performance is noticeably lacking. No appreciable change in MPG (maybe better if anything).

After putting 93 octane back in on an empty tank - the reverse is true:

1. First 1/8 tank the engine feels like there's little difference initially, but improves with a few on/off cycles (normal driving - not just turing the car on and off).
2. By 1/4 tank the car is pulling like a freakin' monster.

BTW - modified type S here - but I'd like all opinions...

i noticed the same in my tl-p (except my mileage went down- the 87 octane had 10% ethanol mix)

Off topic...230 at the wheels seems kinda low for a type S with such mods...assuming 22% drivetrain loss...that would only be like 20whp from headers, 10 from icebox, and 5whp from pulleys. I'm not trying to put you down or anything. I'm just commenting. 14.4 is a lot faster than my car...and the time...not hp is what matters. I'm just a curious noob.

230whp is pretty good, I bet you can get much more out of your car though. 1/4 time is impressive, trap is kinda low for 14.4 though.

Sorry you guys got distracted by my signature line... Now how about the topic?

BTW - 230 whp is right in line for a TL-S with those mods. The highest I've seen with identical mods is 234. At a 24% drivetrain loss that's about 300 to 305 at the crank (stock TL-S at 260 hp dynos at about 197 at the wheel = 24% loss).

We have 10% ethanol regardless of grade in Michigan.
