Cool

Actually, I've heard that around 4500 and 5000 is when you should do the first change. After that, every 3k.....

3750 is recommended from my dealership. They put a sticker on my left corner window shield to remind me.

I was talking to my mechanic, and he recommends to change the first oil before 3,000. He said it will help to get rid of all the metal particles early that occur during the break-in period.
I don't know if he's right or wrong.

delaware dealer is offering free O/C @ every 75oo miles if you buy from them, but I'd spring for the 1st one early

Can someone elaborate on the 'break-in period' how long and how nice? Any early service related to this period - for example, early oil change due to metal shavings, etc....????

ps. I'ma hope-to-soon-own-a-newTL-S fanatic - in other words, shopping for a price...

I was in this week for the "window recall" issue and asked my Acura service manager this exact question, his reply 3500-3750. He also said the dealership does NOT carry, or use, 5W-20 oil for when I get my oil changed. He said that they use Castrol GTX 10W-30 and he would recommend using that in my TL-S and that it will make no difference what-so-ever for use here in Florida

He did say I could bring in my own 5W-20 oil and they would be happy to use that and subtract my cost for that oil from the oil change cost at the dealership. I may just let them use the Castrol GTX house oil!

What's the big difference anyway?

The additives that are in the oil itself, for example mobil 1 has more anti-wear additives than other oils, plus synthetic is a big step over conventional petroleum based oils, especially in hot climates such as S Cali and Florida and cold climates such as Washington and New York and other states...trust me Castrol sucks, hence it is domestic...My 2 cents

I am NOT interested in sythetic oils; I never use them. I was inquiring as to the big difference between a 5W-20 oil, as recommended by the TL-S manual, and the 10W-30 my Acura service manager wants to put in because they don't supply the 5W-20 at the dealership. He says it will not harm the engine and should have no appreciable difference and will NOT affect the warranty.

Post First Oil Change

When is the best time to get that first oil change? Some say 3,000 miles and others say 5,000?????

The dealer is "most likely correct", it will not harm you're engine. That 10w-30 grade oil is definately thicker than a 5w-20. The result of using a 10w-30 conventional oil would be less power and higher gas mileage (more friction).

Yes, the engine would not be harmed, but there is a tradeoff. A 5w-30 synthetic offers substantial benefits and protection over a 10w30 conventional oil that when you look at the extra cost it really is a no-brainer.
