yea i would recomend getting a K&N and removing the resonator. the biggest improvement will be sound but you will gain a few hp.
the resonator is exactly that, it changes (muffles the sound)

hmmm, think I need to remove that thing to then cuz I have the comptech drop in and it sounds like it breathes better but never really felt like i got too much out of it except never buying a new filter.

Will this mod change the sound from the outside of the car too?

Also, all u do is remove the resonator? You dont have to hook anything back in its place?

And, what does a resonator actually do anyway?

do a search on it and you will find out more than you want to know, all it does is act like a muffler for your intake - quiet. serves no other purpose.

i drove a tl with a k&n and one without, both had resonators removed.

all it will do is let in more dirt since it doesn't have as much filter area as stock, plus the gauze is a crappy filter.. you won't gain MPG, power, etc...

stock paper air filters flow almost as well as the gauze variety and filter better.

that's if you care about filtering, if not, have fun

only problem I have experienced with a K&N type filter is that it lets in water easier than the paper. I have one in my truck and in mud or high water situations the K&N lets the water right into the intake. Paper gives a little better barrier in that scenario. So I guess if you are in that type of situation with the car...go paper. Other than that, a properly maintained mesh will do the trick quite well.

Its obvious that to get better filtering you will have to sacrifice some air flow and vis versa. The filtering that you are loosing with a K&N or any other "high flow" filter - K&N, Comptech, the CAI filters... is negligable at most, but any filter that gets wet will most likely let some moisture in - just depends on how much and how hard you are pushing the engine.

i have been running this set up for 140k and have not had a single problem with water and dirt(and i went as far as to cut the bottom side of the air box off. the k&n in my expierencies filter alot better that paper, which when once wet loose alot of there ability to filter and dont last long once wet.
