Exhaust resonator

Hi newbie question here.

I've read some searches and saw that if you have comptech axle backs you can increase the sound if you remove or replace the resonator. Which one is it? Is it the one closer to the cat or the one closer to the rear? Also, what size would I get? 14,16,18? I'm a bit confused. I'm assuming that the smaller the louder. I just don't want it to sound completely rediculous! Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks ahead of time!

You remove teh larger of the 2. By removing it it will get louder. Not so much loud outside the car but the droaning inside will become Very annoying. As for the resonator size thats up to what you find comfortable

For TLP stock B pipe, the resonator is the one closer to the cat. The pre-muffler is the one closer to the rear. The resonator has no sound absorption material. Both serve to reduce noise even though they use different techniques.
Comptech B pipe has no resonator, just a pre-muffler. Neuspeed catback has a resonator and no pre-muffler. Both are louder than stock.

The one closest to the mufflers is the one you want to remove to make a difference in sound

18" is what i have and its loud enough, the droaning from my exhaust tends to annoy some of my passengers (not that i care). Its not so loud that i can be heard from 1/2 a ile away, but it can definitley be heard.

if u want ur car to sound a little more subtle, go with 22", it won't sound as obvious that you've modded the exhaust but you'll still be able to hear it for sure.

I kno the Apexi WS exhaust uses an 18" resonator.

What size is our stock piping on a TL-S? Is it 2.25" or 2.5" or am I way off? I was thinking about doing this myself. I just wanted to know what size inlet to get...

TLP is 2", TLS is 2.25". Comptech B pipe is 2.5" before the Y, but 2.25" for the Y pipe.

the dronning sound is that coming from the exhaust tips or is it because the lack of isulation in the resonator

if im reading the description correct its 2.25in. inlet/2.25in. outlet yea? by little mod if u mean just switching out the resonator then yea thats what u want since it will fit ur stock piping. 18" is generally the size most people go with.

obviously if u want to put in wider piping find one with a 2.5in. inlet/2.25in. outlet so u can fit 2.5in. pipes from the cat

i know that it is the engine. but is the sound excaping from the tips or the rsonator. im guessing the exhaust now that i think of it. so if i were to take the resonator out is it bolted onto the exhaust or is it welded. at work and dont have time to go look.

the exhaust isnt escaping any where. Thats just what the engine is producing in sound. The resonator is welded. you will have to cut it out

i didnt say where the exhaust is excaping from and i know the engine is making that noise. i said where is the sound excaping from. nevermind. how much roughly would it cost to get the resonator installed?

Sorry miss read you. Did you ever make noises into a pipe as a kid (like paper towel roll or pvc pipe, and the tube amplifys sound and resonance, same thing with exhaust pipe.

Considering that a resonator helps eliminate the sound id have to say its from the end of the exhaust. Or it may be that the added back pressure in the pipe slows down the sound enough to keep it from being transmitted thru the pipe.

As for getting it installed, you mean uninstalled? we alreay have teh resonator on the piping. It should be a matter of 20-40 bucks. to cut it out and weld in a piece of pipe in its place.
now if you already have the resonator removed, price will varry on what kind of res you buy and whos selling it

i want to replace it with 18" or 20" just for a slightly louder hollower sound that i can hear inside the car under normal driving conditions (acceleration) i just dont want the droning sound ruining everything. just a nice throaty exhaust instead of that silent exhaust sound that i have right now. my CAI is overpowering the exhaust 10 fold. any recomendations on a replacement resonator???

If you are stock exhaust and want a little sound (but not unbearable droning) just have the largest exhaust resonator cut out. I did and am happy with it.

My TL is stock, no CAI. And if I use the A/C and listen to the stereo, I don't really notice the exhaust on the freeway. But around town I can hear it as long as I don't drown it out with the stereo.

No it wont be at all. 03CoupeV6 did it and loves it. Now if you had like the HKS or Comptech mufflers then i would say the droan will be loud and you most likely wouldnt like it much, but with stock mufflers its not bad at all.

i just dont want it to be too loud i hate when i have to turn up my radio up to over power the exhaust. but when the radio is off i want to hear the exhaust. best of both worlds im hoping for.

if you do cut out the resonator and dont like the sound, you can always just have the shop weld in a smaller one and see if that brings the tone more in range with what you are looking for

That's pretty much exactly what getting the large exhaust resonator gets you with stock mufflers. With the radio on, you can't hear it. Turn the radio off and you can hear it.

To me it sounds like a toned down version of the 350Z exhaust note. I like it a lot, it gives the TL a little more soul. I have Pilot 3.5" exhaust tips, and they look really good to go along with the sound. I'm not a fan of AEM exhausts.

Toned down volume rise. It's a V6 exhaust note. It sounds good, and it's a reversible procedure.

nothing to worry about. Get your car down to the exhaust shop and have them remove the resonator already

jerks took off the wrong one i think. they took off the little tube one. instead of the big muffler looking one.
