Engine runs rough when it start.
Engine runs rough when it start.
Hi guys,
I did search but couldn't find an answer I was looking for.
I have 2000 TL and have this problem.
When I start the engine, it runs very rough for 10 seconds.
And yesterday, it sounds almost die and rough and rough for 20 sec.
And it runs very smooth and ok. Also when I drive, it doesn't have any problem.
I replace spark plugs and air filt but doesn't help it.
And when I check there is no error code also.
What do you think?
Thanks.

It is 160. and I use Denso Iridium spark(right spec. one)
But the problem was there before I replace spark plugs.
I thought it will help better if I replace spark plugs.
Last Saturday was very hot weather and I drove over 20 miles and turned off. after 20 min. when I restart engine, it stall worst.
Like cough cough,...and after 15 seconds, it was ok.
And I found this. All I need is replacing 'fuel pressure regulator'
The bulletin Jens is refering to (B01-001) addresses intermitent hard start after hot soak. The cure for that is to replace the fuel pressure regulator. The cold start, long crank is an issue we see most in fall and spring. It too is fuel related. The gas companies switch from Winter to Summer blends at those times and the change in vapor pressure from the fuel can cause wierd starting problems- particularly if you still have winter gas and the temp gets warm or summer gas and the temp gets cold. Not much you can do about this. The other issue is that you may be getting a slight loss of pressure in the fuel system after the car sits overnight. When you turn the key, the fuel pump is activated and pressurizes the system. It take a second or so to build pressure back up- thus the extra cranks. The best cure for this is to turn the key to on for a second or two then to crank. This gives the pump time to work and you should have a shorter crank. These really aren't problems and they do exist in most fuel injected cars.

it could be carbon build up - have you used any fuel additive? I use Sea Foam and others like it also. if you have not used it, I would put 2 full cans in a full tank of gas and run to near empty before you fill back up. It make take a couple tanks to clear up but that should help.
with that many miles you will have lots of carbon buildup. I have taken my intake manafold off a few times to clean it and each time I am amazed how dirty it is. I have 173000 miles on my '99. Even still a few times it is rough for a few seconds when it starts.

Clean the EGR ports, Run seafoam thru the fuel and motor, It could be the FPR. This isnt a common thing on these cars and its a case by case diagnosis. (it could be other things like the baro sensor on the ECU or other sensors so i would start with the easy stuff and go from there, even the FPR is a easy DIY)
