Engine randomly shuts off while driving - HELP!!

I solved one problem with the car (LINK), but another one just creeped up. I just got my new battery today and every was good, but I noticed the car seemed to surge while stopped. At first I thought nothing about it, but it bothered me. So I get to a red light and put the car into neutral and after about 10 seconds the car just shut off. I put the car into park and start the car (starts right up) and drive to gas station as I am low on fuel and thought the car might be starved for fuel. Pump the tank full and go on my merry way home. I get to the sub-division i live in and make the right turn and the car shuts off..mid turn... I again start the car again and proceed, I make a left turn into my driveway and the car shuts off again... mid turn... At this point I am lost for what is going on... Please help. I have done some searching:

Ignition Switch - saw this thread, but I don't have a 1999, Are our the 2003 predisposed to the same issue???

Immobilizer - I saw post #6 and thought maybe, but I don't have any keys with a chip except mine. But a few nights ago, I drove around the block with the green key blinking on my dash.

Again, guys... your thoughts???

is the green key light still on? try another key. bad battery can be a cause. or the alternator is bad. get the whole system checked cost pennies but eliminates two probably causes. battery terminals clean and tight?

Wow, mine is doing the same thing and I see the green key light as well when the car kills so Im thinking its my ignition switch as I have the '99.

I think the ignition switch problems can affect any of the 2nd gen TLs. The current replacement switch is, IIRC, the same part for the 1999 and the 2000-2003 model years. And one of the redesigned replacements failed in my 1999 TL a couple of years ago.

So I wouldn't rule that out.

When my TL had stalling problems it would sometimes occur when I was making a turn. I think that might have been due to the force of the keychain generated when the car was turning. (You might want to see if you can get the car to stall by applying a load to the keychain.)

Battery tray was cleaned out, some petroleum jelly was applied to the terminals. The battery terminals are tight on there and ain't going anywhere either.

But I never had the replacement in the first place so mine should be good from the start. How often does the ignition switch fail? How expensive is the part and is there a DIY on this job???

What do you mean by this? I don't understand this...

I did some more searching and found someone that had the issue and blamed his distributor... don't know if that fixed the issue, though...

the recall was only for 99s-but much like the transmission...more years use the same part
Any ignition switch can fail on any car- happens all the time
they are about 50 bucks- there is a DIY- see that section

More than a few, 2-3 keys on a key ring puts force inside the switch
Enough weight can wear out parts inside- the key is supposed to be there by itself
Test if thats the problem by moving the key while engine running--PARKED of course!

Sounds like either the ignition, or an alternator.
I have experienced both.

If i remember right 2003 need a ECU learn procedure ( if i remember correctly). I know its in the manual on how to do it. Its something like put it in gear with foot on brake hold it there till engine cooling fan turns on.
