Unhappy Engine Knocking

I just purchased a 2000 Acura TL, There is a knocking sound coming from underneath the engine cover, the guy who sold it to me said that it may be a lifter problem he said just to keep regular oil changes and the car will last.

The knocking is really loud upon COLD start ups but is faintly noticeable when warmed up. I really like the car and really paid a good price, now im stuck between keeping the car or giving it back and loosing money. The mechanic said it shouldn't be a problem as long as the oil is changed regularly. I just don't want to get stuck with a seized engine one day.

Any input of what should I do, and can i leave the car like this without creating a bigger problem to the engine?? I also read about the valves needing adjustment could that be the problem?? The noise a clear "knocking" there is no ticking, so I really dont know what the problem could be?

First of all, any mechanic that tells you to ignore an abnormal noise such as knocking or any other type of odd sound is an IDIOT!!! Find another mechanic and have him check the valvetrain as it seems you need to have the valves adjusted. It may be something else, who knows? Do NOT ignore the problem, it will only get worse!!

Welcome to the forum!

Sometimes you need to use a good private owned honda/acura specialist shop- most towns have 2 or more~ look in the real phone book yellow part- automobile repairing and service. They can properly diagnose and you can decide if your skills are up to it, or let the pro quickly take care of it.
Noises are there to let you know something is wrong.
Here is the owner book link- free- in case your car didnt come with one

A good mechanic will use a stethascope to see if its a valve-rocker noise, meaning they need adjustment, or a water pump bearing or ac belt tensioner pulley or, well thats the main ones

How many miles does your car have now? They are due to replace those things and get a valve adjustment at 105,000 miles
IS the oil dirty???- does it smell burned or look burned on the dipstick?
Yes these engines will run forever as long as you make sure its critical bits are taken care of!
Whats the coolant look like in the overflow/res bottle? and when cold- open cap and see what it looks like inside the radiator.
Give us a few more clues!!
There is no taking back in car buying!!!!

Does your motor sounds like this?

I'm wondering if I don't have a lifter problem... or a valve problem. I'm getting it inspected on Monday.

FInd a different mechanic and find out what the noise is. Is it a bearing or is it valves. What oil are you using? What weight?
