Angry Driver's Seatback

Has anyone out there had a comfort problem with the Type-S drivers seatback? My 2002 is killing both my wife and me. It has a bulge just at the beltline that feels like you're resting on a brick! The lumbar support is above this area and isn't a problem.
The passenger's seatback feels fine. The dealer tells me that they have had several complaints but can't find anything wrong with the seats. Is this normal???

Haven't had a chance to sit in another one, but I'm going by the dealer tomorrow. So far, everything has been over the phone. I can't imagine them all being this uncomfortable.

I've given it almost 10K miles and haven't got used to it yet. My back gets sore after a hundred miles or so.

I'd suggest one of those lumbar pillows. Something similar to these from Brookstone: http://www.brookstone.com/shop/thumb...h_words=lumbar
There are cheaper ones out there.
The TL/CL seats don't give enough lumbar support. That little switch does nothing. I personally like the seats in BMW's.

There is a lever on the side of your seat, try playing with it and see how it feels.

Yes, I've given that a try but it has no effect around the beltline.

i found domestic cars having better and more comfortable seats...maybe coz they are designed for larger size ppl...

actually the lumbar lever can be adjusted and is not just on and off. Many positions in between.

I had the same problem too.
The 260 HP for the TL-S is great, but the darn "sport" seats are way too hard. So are the shocks.

That was why I went with the TL-P. Don't get me wrong. I can well afford the TL-S , but this is a case of "What I want" does not equal to "what I need".
I drive 50-60 miles a day through Freeway constrution that is not scheduled to be completed till 2007. (Can't lower my car for the same reason either)
By the time it's done, it will be time for another car.

I know what you're talking about. I noticed that the day i drove my car home from the dealer. It feels like there is a rod or pole lying horizontally just above your belt line. I think it's a part of seat frame.

The seats pretty much suck, even the CL seats are much different.

I think I can drive longer in my f350 without my back getting sore than I can with this car.

Wow, the seats must be designed for short people like me. When I sit in the TLS, even for more than 3 hours in a row, I feel like I'm in heaven.

Well what is considered short? I'd say 5'9 (me) is about average and I have no back problems while sitting in the seat given that my back is somewhat trashed.

Only thing I feel is the seam where the perf.leather meets the smooth leather at the top of the seatback. It took weeks to get used to this. It hits right on my right shoulder blade. I wish I could have TL-P seats in my TL-S!!!!

I'm thinking of having an upholstry guy to modify my seatback. I've got to do something otherwise I can't travel over about 100 miles at a time without getting out and walking around for a few minutes. I dropped by the dealer and sat in another 2002 TL-S and also a 2003. They were just as uncomfortable as mine.

As far a reconstructing the seat, does anyone know how the side airbag works, is it in the seat and if so, where in the seat?

the side airbag is in the side bolster of the seats (outboard) the passenger seat contains a sensor as an integral part of the upper seat foam. Both seats have integral seat heaters as part of the foam however the passenger seat only has a bottom heater as the seat back contains the sensors for the occupnat detection system.
Auto seats are designed to fit as many people as possible however please try to remember that not all people can be fitted.Much in the same way not everybody can wear size twelve shoes.
I would advise strongly against modifying the seats especially the passenger seat due to the airbags and their relevant electronics. If you do decide to add a cushion etc.make absolutely certain that this does not interfere in any way with the airbags as in blocking them.

I had the exact same problem when I first got my '02 last year. It took a little while but I don't notice it anymore.

alg...your lumbar must be defective. I can feel a definite deference with the lumbar on. I usually keep mine half way on.

JensH,
Thanks for that informative post. I think I'll take your advice and leave the seat alone. I appreciate the help!

Hey buddy, I don't think I could drive 100 miles at a time in a floaty, cushy Buick Roadmaster or a Cadillac w/o getting up and walking it off ..
