Downshifting in SS

What is the proper way to do this? Whenever I try, it's violently jerky. I'm not downshifting at high RPMs or anything, I mean I could let it drop to 1Kish and it will still jerk HARD. This is probably a stupid question, but I don't know a ton about cars or intricacies of driving.

it should not jerk violently. it should feel fairly solid.

I think he exaggerated a little bit or he actually has a tranny problem. Mine does the same. What I do is when RPMs are below ~1500 I get off the gas and downshift. Then I get on the gas again when the engine gets louder/RPMs get higher. I experience a slight jerk. I got it to the point where it only jerks a little bit, but some people can shift in SS without any jerk at all?

just let it downshift automatically while in SS.

Yeah, in a TL, i would rather pay for the brakes to save the tranny. Yeah, i get a bit of jerk in SS, but not much.

Downshifting will not damage the tranny. Unfortunately there is no way to rev-match using an auto tranny, so jerking is gonna happen.

You could have a bad motor mount, Bill5.

Other than that... To smooth it down a little, give it a little gas just prior to downshift (at least don't be completely off the gas). On mine this tends to lessen the jerk of the downshift.

yea thats how i blew 2 trannys...down shifting heats up the tranny espicially high rpm downshifts. you may save the brakes but your doing it at the cost of your tranny. i learned this the hardway. now i only use SS mode when i race or on the highway so i can leave it in 5th. no more downshifting for me unless i absolutely have to

if the tranny is going to go its going to go nothing is going to stop it. i dont do high rpm down shifts anyway. but a little engine braking will save your brakes. and the more that your tranny turns the more fluid is moved keeping the tranny cooler actually.

OK, seriously SOMEONE is giving you bad car care advice, or none at all. So keeping the tranny turning keepd the tranny cooler, which is why there's no such thing as a transmission cooler for that purpose? Your logic on both brakes and transmission just doesn't add up.

No engine braking is required on this car, adn again, you don't use a $3,000 transmission to save $200 brakes. That much is simple math.

yes moving the fluid from one place to another will keep it cooler. not that down shifting is going to really effect that much but the point i was trying to make was that down shifting is not going to hurt the tranny. if the tranny is going to go its going to go either way.

what you need to do is take it to the dealer and get the oil jet installed.
