Door knob prototype

This is just a very rough prototype of the door knob I am going to make for my car. If you have a better design ideas that can be machine easily please let me know.

Agean,

The plastic door column that pop up and down when you luck and unlock the door. This is not a final design. I am working on it to enhance the look.

Hamony, what about hollowing out the top and mounting a LED for the alarm??? I know it would require additional intricate work, but if you can do, it'll be one helluva mod!!

That would be easy but you have to do the wiring yourself!

Oh, wait! but how are going to run a wire? There is not enough room inside the rod. The thread section of the rod take much of the space.
I don't think you add LED to it.

thats pretty cool! You are pretty creative. Where did you find the LED for the clock? I've always wanted to do my clock in that color, but haven't found a bulb to fit. I would think it's the same part for the accord, but I'm not sure. Looks good.

accordv6.

Here is the blue LED I used for the clock. They are VERY expensive! $10 each!

Here is a door knob with blue LED. Well this is just a prototype.
I don't know how can we fit it. Any idea?

hchhon, if you could somehow drill 2 very small diameter holes between the outer wall and the threaded hollowed out shaft, you might be able to extend the leads of the LED down through them and then solder wires to the ends of that. Or maybe you could make two channels inside the threads that the wires could run down and not interrupt the threads themselves.

I vote on NO led for now and focus on getting the parts out as soon as possible. Persoanlly I wouldnt want to deal with the wiring...and as ElegantTL-S said, I wouldnt want it on all 4 doors either. Just find out a way to mass produce the 4 studs and later cater to the few that might like lights in theirs.

This is a bit off topic but hchhon:

With regards to your one pic of your shifter painted with #225 medium charcoal over the black moving plastic...

Where did you get the paint, is it normal paint or car touch-up paint and how did you get in there to paint it? Did you take the plate off to do it.

I am very interested.

edgalang,

You are right. I should just focus on the part without LED first. Mount the LED is easy but wiring it is not easy. There is not enough room to run a wire inside that. I was thinking when I drove home if I make the rod longer than the one in the car I might able to run two tiny wires without interfering with the thread.vIf you guy don't mine having the rod sticking higher than it is now I might able to do it. I can come up with something to make it work on my car but I am not too sure for you guys whos are not electrical know-how.

It is just a prototype. I need to go back to machine the rod to look better first before thinking of adding LED.

ABDomega,

I got the paint from Autozone. It is a spray paint. Yes you have to remove that black moving plastic out. Read your email.

Tip: If you got the plastic out make sure you spray paint it very slowly. Spray a little and let it dry...spray a little and let it dry.. you get the ideas. I used the whole can for those two plastics.
The paint does seem to stick well on the pastic that is why you need to spray paint over and over until you like. If you try to scratch it the paint will hold. I had it paint about 7 months now and it still look perfect..no scratch!

hchhon,

I apologize but I believe I erased the message you sent me via email. I have so much spam that I get careless with my deleting. My bad.
If you send it again it will be appreciated.

Thanks

hchhon,
Once again another great innovation on your part, just yesterday I was thinking if there were any replacement aluminum stems for our cars, and now you designed and stepped it up a level with this led idea. Bravo.

As for the wiring problem, this is difficult to explain however it you understand this then I think you are in business.

you can notch or drill two holes (one on each side) about half way down the stem (which will sit just underneath the door panel.) therefore the wires can be run however necessary and it will not interfere or be seen. The only down side is you have to take off the doorpanel for the installation. however very worth it. Let me know when I can buy a set.

Great Job hchhon.

I like what you have done to our car it is probably even better in person. Keep us posted so that we see other transformations on your ride. I also wanted to ask a questions about the light on the driver door for the security. What type bulb does it use and where could I find them?

Thanks

TLNY,

Thanks! John, about the extra security I used these super wide angle LED from http://www.netdisty.net/ds/ld120cwr/ and the part number is
L206CR3K-5.4VF. It was not that simple to do. First you have to drill a hole through the pastic to fit the LED and you have to change some resistor value in the circuit board (a tiny circuit board that drive the LED and it is located under the original LED. If you have some basics electronic knowledge and creative you can do it.

Hey Hamony, thanks for e-mailing me.

anyway..I really like the second design better. as for the LED, I guess we can figure that out later, I don't know if it'll be worth the trouble now. We're you able to remove your door knob yet?

If the material you are using conducts electricity then the ground/negative side of the led can be solderd internally within the knob leaving only one wire to worry about.

Yeah that was my car. However it couldn't be in the show because I was actually judging Europeon and Domestic? I know that I wasn't judging my class but it would still create problems if I would win. So I chose not to enter, Ah what's another trophy anyway?
