Post Does your TLS burn fuel when AC is on?

Any stats out there as what the milage is when using the AC, I usually open window when driving even on a hot day, because I guess I am just too cheap.

Not me...I barely drive with any windows open. No dust is gonna get in my car! Nothing but auto climate control here.

Driving with your windows down is less efficient than running your air conditioner compressor. I keep my AC and recirc on all the time (it was 90 today) on so I can preserve the leather smell...

I believe there was a study done which showed that because of the airo-dynamic effect of having the widows down that it was actually more fuel consuming than having them up. So hey, my windows are ALWAYS up and I am conserving fuel. But really, in South Florida I rarely if ever even open a window on the car.

You will not save fuel with window open, because the car is less aerodynamic. It is a better cost-benefit ratio to have the A/C on , your favorite CD turning with reasonable RPM for your VTEC

I always use circulation mode because the air outside (NJ) is just terrible, especially commute time when all you get is the exhaust from the car in front of you.

Trying to save gas by not using AC is terrible. I'd have turned off AC to give some extra HP if I need it (my old old car had problem with AC on and climbing hill), but I don't think that's a problem with TL.

How about when you open the sun roof, does that also interfere with the aerodyanmic of the car.

Of course it does. It's only a matter of personal choice as to whether you want to trade off a little aerodynamic efficiency for a little sunshine and fresh air.

But isn't this at highway speeds only? Say you are going less than 20mph in a residential area. What then?

At speeds less than 20 mph, I don't think you need to be too concerned with aerodynamics. Heck, the wind might be blowing faster than you're driving.

You paid 32K for a car and are too cheap to run the AC? Why didn't you buy a Honda Insight? I'm curious to what other ways do you restrict yourself from enjoying your car. Do you not take advantage of the 260 HP by not accelerating hard in order to save gas? Do you not drive it hard to save on tire wear?

And yes I even have hard time making the requird car payments sometimes. I love TL-S, so much as that half of my monthly paycheck is spent on the car loan, and yes I am a poor person who fill his car with the diesel fuel if I have to otherwise I get the cheapest unleaded gas I can find in the Bay Area. Please don't flame me just because I am a janitor who wash bathroom in a local high school everyday, and making a minimum wage of $6.50/hour.

Best way to save gas is by driving moderately. If you have the AC off to conserve gas, then leave the windows closed too.

BTW, I have my AC on all the time. I'm getting around 18 mpg on my ride.......

Cool

I've heard that A/C probably costs 1 to 2 MPG.

I'd suggest using it on occasion, based on recommendations I've gotten from numerous Dealers/Service departments, just to keep it functioning. Otherwise, you'll wind up with condenser/charging expenses.

Best of luck with your car!

You know I noticed that my TL does well with the AC on regarding fuel consumption. My 540i with the AC on, well you'd think you're leaking gas or something. This week alone I filled up 3 times on my 540i and I drove an average of 100 miles per day with the AC on. My woman drives the TL and her commute is like 36 miles one way and I didn't fill her tank up til yesterday and she still had like 3 gallons left or so.

Doubt that having one window open would have much effect on anything - I drive like that all the time, and even turn on the recirc button to keep my air cleaner, well, cleaner. I believe the studies that showed having the a/c on saved gas were for cars with all the windows open, at hiway speeds.

I like to hear the air, the road, etc - it has to be in the 90's for me to run the climate control, but that is more a personal preference, as I don't like the isolated, cooped up feeling.

I get better mileage with the CLS in city loop traffic (10 miles in 30-45 minutes) than my wife does in her perfectly maintained '95 Altima GXE manual w/30K miles (both with A/C running and windows closed). She gets about 13-16 MPG in the "hideous drive to work loop" and I've gotten about 15-18 MPG driving the same loop.

BTW -- I have gotten over 30MPH on the highway/freeway doing about 80 MPH average (but no overkill pedal mashing allowed). On the other hand, in town, with A/C, and in a sig-alert with some nasty speed runs in the hills, I managed 13MPG. Nothing is constant!
