Diagnosed!
Went to a Acura dealership for a diagnostic on my 02 TLS because my CEL came on, Found codes 1298, P0700 and P0740, Internal transmission failure! Can't be right because I brought it up to Cottmann transmission a couple days ago and they said nothing was wrong with my transmission, but something electrical could be causing it to act up. Holla at me if you guys know whats up!

damn, thats past the warranty deadline... 109k or 7years 7 months... although i'd still go to the dealership and try to reason with them. How long has the current transmission been in there?

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago, 0700, 0740 even though the car hasn't shown a single sign of tranny failure. Only a day after I got it back from the Acura dealer telling me it will need a new tranny the CEL went off by itself and the car still hasn't had any problems two weeks later now and the light hasn't come back on. I wouldn't worry about it unless the tranny actually starts acting up.

yes the trans will often give a few weeks warning, then be fine for a week, then poof its gone. Acura has different test equipment that private shops dont have, or Cottman doesnt like rebuilding acura trans so yours was ~ fine. Obviously not- or you wouldnt have been at cottman in the first place!
Even though the OP is over mileage- its not by that much and acura has been very generous recently- especially an 02- under time over/over miles
The car itself carries the warranty- so as long as its not a salvage title or rebuilt car title, its just a regular car, doesnt matter if you are the 10th owner- the car is covered
Go talk with the service MANAGER at the dealer
see thread on trans failure for all you need to know

These trannys rarely if ever go from no problems to complete lockup without any warnings other than a CEL. Sorry but spending $1500-4000 for a new tranny just because the cmputer says so is not exactly very smart if you ask me. My father bought a van with a worn and slipping gear on its tranny from day one and guess what, six years later it's still running.

Nobody's telling him to get a new trans. What fsttyms1 and everyone else was saying that this is something that should be looked at. If you get warning such as a bad trans code, leaving it alone is a bad idea, thats all.

Leaving it alone isn't a bad idea as long as it continues to work as it should, that's what I'm saying. Don't believe everything the computer tells you. At the first sign of the tranny acting abnormally though it should definitely be looked at.

Are you a Senior Acura Tech- or somehow have vast knowldege of the internals of the transmission??
Knowledge beyond that of our moderator who has actually rebuilt his TL auto trans??
Or the collective failure experience of the members here?
Exactly how many trans failures have you had anyway??

You took the car to Cottman and Acura why again???
When the Acura dealer found the codes- what did they say for you to do?
Why didnt they replace the trans then?
Did they say drive it till its worse?
What part of the story has been left out so far?

I gave my opinion. Go get a new trans if you want, it's your money. It won't hurt anything to wait for the trans to show actual problems, especially if it ends up not having a problem.
Don't get me wrong here, if the car is still under warranty and the dealer will replace it for free then there's no issue.

The original poster of this thread went to cottman and then the dealer for trans inspection.
That lead me to believe there was an operational problem with the transmission, or they really suspected one!
If it was bad by Acura standards as listed in several places- even over the miles limit, they would normally work with you to get a replacement at a discount.
I still want to know exactly what the dealer said.

Anyway as far as driving it YMMV, literally, Ive been driving with a trans thats been slippin into 4th for about 8k now, also it pops in reverse sometimes, definite signs of a dying tranny, but I too am out of warranty, i guess we all get a little brave when we have AAA to fall back on.. anyways good luck...

Most independent transmission shops will charge around $2800 to rebuild a transmission and that doesn't even include mounts.
I'd say jump on it.

The few 5AT rebuilds that I know of have cost around $2800 as some solenoids usually need to be replaced in addition to the normal master overhaul kit and torque converter.
3k for rebuilding the unit and mounts, installed, is a steal. Be sure to ask if their rebuild kit includes the updated 3rd clutch frictions.

agree- thats a a great price
Is it a known shop?- does it offer 3 year 36k mile warranty
If not call around- the AA shop offers that, I dont know about Cman and their work
Ask how many Tiptronics they have personally done at that shop
How many had to be re-done
For those over miles limit but under years,- The dealer will normally work with you so you pay 1000-3000 depending on the situation. Full retail installed in 4 gs.
I know of cars at 120-144k miles that the dealer warrantied at 100% or nearly that.
The Service Manager needs to be on your side and make a call the the Regional Rep who gives approval,
All that goes out the window if salvage title- then your best option is the rebuilers

The dealer will only tell you what the computer tells you and will give you the choices I have mentioned. Until the tranny starts to show signs, you do not and should not spend lots of money to replace it. Nothing foolish or stupid about it.
