Custom Cams Feeler

In this thread the idea of getting custom made cams for the J32 and J30 engine has been brought up. So thought I'd put this in both CL forums to see what the response is and if there's enough interest we could start a group buy. I along with I'm sure everyone else is mainly interested in the cost which I don't know at this time but I'm sure the more people we have the cheaper the price. here are two companies that make custom cams
http://www.jonescams.com/2006catalog_001.htm
http://www.kamsinc.com/

If anyone knows of any others please post their site hear. Now I would like to contact these companies and try to get as much info from them as possible including a quote but I don't feel that I'm the right person for this since I don't know enough about engines to carry on much of an intelligent conversation with these people. So if someone would like to step up and get some info for all of us that would be much appreciated.

thanks guys. a few things for those that don't follow in the CL forums...

02av6, johnytypes, and myself have sourced out 05+ RL Camshafts which have a more aggressive lift on the intake side. But based on their design they just miss fitting in our heads by fractions of an inch. So basically, we have the specs already, we just need the people. i doubt this will even happen without a group buy, so i'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

I brought this topic up in the RL cam thread... lol.. I figured we now had every measurement we would need for a custom cam shaft. The RL cam is more agressive in the lower RPMS repsectivly, however could we make adjustments to gain even more in the upper RPMs? Is our cam almost maxing in the higher RPMS with the stock height? leaving little adjustments in the upper RPMs..

My comments were defeted by a member saying "the custom cam would cost over a grand and without any proven gains who would be the guinea pig willing to throw down that money?" I left the conversation like that.. if the custom cam costs over a grand I couldn't see many of us here doing it.. however if it was in the area of 4-500 I could see a much larger group of people trying it..

i think i may have been the one saying it would cost over 1,000. but after talking over with some people i'm pretty sure it would come in much less.

as far as maxing out the upper RPM powerband, i dont know. it all depends on how much the stock springs can take. i'm sure if we use RL spec, and also give the rest of the lobes a mild lift increase, we would see gains across the board.

my guess is that it will be in the 500-750 range if we get the right amount of people, and i'd say we're talking 15+ hp gains. thats what was expected with the RL cams. but if we tweak the exhaust lift, we could see a higher peak HP number as well as low RPM power. low RPM power on this car would make the gains worth it.

<--- i'll be the guinea pig =]

I am interested too. I need another mod and I can't afford a SC and don't want nitrous....right now at least. I would question the driveability of our cars if we swapped out cams for more agressive ones. Wouldn't that create idling issues and possible stalling issues when not accelerating? I need to see info that this will work. I guess if someone wants to be the guinea pig and they step up and show me what benefits there were I would definitely be up for this. How expensive do you guys think it would be to have new cams installed?

well, like i stated before, we can get the cams to the RL spec. which would run fine. their more aggressive but not enough to cause idle issues. as far as cost, we have been quoted in 500s, but theres nothing def yet.

are you saying in the 500's installed? that was my question, how much installed only? I don't think I would do this mod myself.

I thought the RL cams and the Type-S cams had nearly the same specs, except the RL ones had a slightly higher lift on the exhaust side?

If I'm shelling out the bucks for cams, I want something more aggressive.

Is there any sort of estimate on the power gains - changing cams might seem not so hard, but if it doesn't do all that much; it might be better to persue other avenues.

This thread can stay if it stays as just a feeler thread to gauge interest, but if starts crossing into groupbuy territory, it'll have to be locked until cleared by one of teh admins. Just a FYI.

Good Luck with the project guys,

this is just a feeler... no vendor yet.

RL cams give gains in low-end and exhaust/vtec side is not changed. but i figure it goes without saying that we will put a higher lift ont he vtec-exhaust side since they will be custom cams. the point behind my statement that the RL cams have higher spec than CL is that, CL-S / RL have the same valve springs, which means, this springs can take a slightly bigger lift.

-First we need to actually discuss the specs of the cam we want to make. Will this cam work in the 99-03 TL, 02-03 TLS, CL and CL-S?

-We need to find a reliable manufacturer of custom cams and speak to them about making a cam to our specs.. get a price...

- Order a set or a couple of sets to a member(s) with current dyno sheets, or doesn't mind dynoing before the cam install.

- Allow these members to install the cams, allow the car to adjust, then dyno the car.

once this is completed, then we can discuss a group buy for these cams from "John Doe" Custom Cam shop.

Adressing the first point,

1)What are the cam specs we want to use for this cam?

2)Will this cam mod need aditional parts for installation? springs etc?

3) Who has a connection to a reliable custom cam shop? we're not going to choose the first one that pops up on google.. remember that we have members in the US, Canada and abroad, therefore the shop can't have some stupid international shipping policy.
