Smile THE CURE FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEM ON THE new TLs

I work in an Acura Dealer and spoke to one of the technicians who does the transmission on the TLs all the time .
He said that as long as you change the transmission fluid often the chance of getting a busted tranny is low...that's only if you guys don't abuse your sport-shift.

He had a good reason

Yes, but that will be the best "ghetto" method you have!

Thats a crappy cure for a car that is $30,000. There should not even be an issue with the trannys

That's a bandaid fix, but as long as I keep my Accord V6, it has the same problem. I've learned the fact about more frequent tranny fluid change. It should be done every year.

Like I said, i'm not an expert in cars, I currently bought a TL-S and heard of these drama regarding trannys. The way i see it is not a "band-aid" fix or "ghetto fix"... it's more of prevent my $30,000 car from getting messed up. As long as i take care my car there shouldn't be any problem. Please don't get me wrong, i just wanna post something i know that might benefit all TL owners.

*normally often is every 15,000 miles

WTF? If so, why are there NO 2002-2003 TL-P tranny failures reported by our members, but almost 60 2002-2003 tranny failures?

Is the fluid crappy in the Type S???

I don't buy the tranny flush prevention either. I recall one member on here with no mods who didn't abuse his ride or regularly use SportShift. He flushed his tranny at 10K then at 20K (remember, the owner's manual says 30K is the first required flush) and his tranny went out at 27K. If it's going to go, it's going to go and there ain't a damn thing you can do about it.

I don't know about you guys, but not using sport shift is no fix in my book. I use sport shift constantly then i slap that biyatch into auto and keep on hogg'n! if your so worried find the thread in this forum about adding a B&M tranny cooler.

Just noticed that there's two of these threads! Does anyone know how much Acura charges for a tranny flush? Perhaps they should do them for free!

I don't think the Type S tranny is crappy, but I do think that there's more torque and horsepower for the same type of tranny to handle.

I've seen posts by premium members that had their tranny die. Even a few 99 members (4 speed not 5) have had their trannies go. Lots of Accord owners have their trannies crap out too. Its NOT a power issue, its a design flaw. Also whats all this bull about not using sports shift? Its hilarious to me how many people think not using sports shift is going to affect the life of the tranny. Think about it for a sec, what is there possibly to "abuse" while using sports shift? Yea you can hit the fuel cutoff, which cant be great for the car but big whoop. Sports shift just tells the our transmissions which gear we went to be in. Thats it. Theres no special change in how the car drives or how much power gets to wheels, you just get the car to shift faster then flooring it and waiting for a downshift, so even the # of shifts the tranny will make in sports shift vs fully auto cant be that much different

I'm not saying a flush is a bad idea, certainly cant hurt any, but its no cure. Like pianoman41 said if your transmission is going to go, its going to go

I'm wondering how many of the new accord 5 speeds are going to fail or if Honda finally redesigned their transmissions

I couldn't have said it better myself I do the same ****! The reason I got this car was for 260hp, vtec, and SS.If thats whats killin the trannies then thank god for my warranty, that's what it's for.

I went in yeterday for an oil change at 19,900 miles and asked about a tranny flush and they said not to worry about it untill 30k!

I've done loads of mountainous/hilly driving and my car is starting to shift funny.

BUT, i'm almost at 30k and will do the flush soon and pray for it to die before the warranty is out.

the service guy at Crown Acura told me that it's Acura's fault for not including a tranny cooler.

getting a tranny cooler is the best investment you could make right now (if you are out of warranty).

the 2004 TL will have one.

**the service guy reccomended that you should wait until it dies and then put a tranny cooler on the new one if they haven't already**

I paid $158 for a flush by Acura.

And I believe whole heartedly that it's going to go when it wants to go, and there ain't one dang thing we can do about it. Here is my reasoning.

I own a '99 TL and didn't get the tranny flushed until over 60,000 miles (okay I goofed), I use the sport shift every time I drive, and I drive my car HARD. We got an '01 TL for my wife. She NEVER used the sport shift, and didn't drive the car hard, and we had to have a new tranny at 21,000 miles.

There is no rhyme nor reason for when a tranny goes. Something interesting, when we took the '01 in with tranny problems, I did not get a lick of trouble from them. They didn't tell me what the problem was, nor offered an explanation, but were more than willing to fix it, just like they knew there was a problem, but didn't want to tell me.
