Cruise control not working

Hi!,

I just bought my parents 2002 3.2tl as a second/winter car. But the cruise control does not work. The ''cruise control'' light in the dash lights up when I push the button but the speed does not stay still... My parents already ask the Acura dealer on this and they told them that the complete throttle body as to be changed, can this be fix with less cost?

Thanks for your time!

remove the plastic engine cover and check the throttle mechanism
One cable goes to the gas pedal the other over to the cruise control

I have seen the springs get gunked up and the cruise cable get kicked off its mount, then no cruise!
Check that first- clean and lube the springs/cables and adjust tension if needed
- small amount of freeplay on cable is required

Dont believe the dealer without a lot more explanation
Yes TB may have failed but odd to be cruise related- go take a look and ask a 2nd mechanic for an opinion
Dont buy a TB from the dealer!!!

you are making sure the power is on with the cruise light-
then over 35mph holding steady speed- you push and hold the cruise button? and it wont stay on speed?

new throttle body!? that sounds like BS

yeah there are 2 lights for the cruise. one is in the master switch on the left and the other lights up (next to gauges) when you push the steering wheel [set] button.

the cruise module might be bad also. it's the gizmo that pulls on the 2nd throttle cable for cruise control. there is a whole checkout procedure to diagnose it that is bad. buy a helms manual if you are interested in fixing things on your own. "newperson" is selling one.

I bet it's the bad grounding problem that develops in the steering wheel causing the steering wheel controls not work. Ever have any problems with the horn or radio controls on the wheel not working?

If you can find a place to do this without running off the road or killing somebody, try setting the cruise buttons while you have the steering wheel turned away from dead straight center. That will usually get a good ground until you straighten it up.

Also check the brake switch by brake padel. Some times it stuck in open position and it results in inoperative cruise control. Good Luck.

My cruise control doesn't work either...

I hit the cruise control button next to the fog light switch, it lights up, then I reach a speed of lets say 40mph, and hit the SET button on the steering wheel. On the dashboard, the green CRUISE light lights up for a second and goes away, thats it.

I already checked under the engine cover for that wire, but I'm gonna check again and take pics this time just to make sure

You might try reading a few of the post from this search to possibly point you in the right direction. The suggestion to replace the TB stems from the fact that the cam, that is part of the TB, that the cruise control cable slots into is made of plastic and if broken is not sold seperately. You can fix it easily. Do a search "Cruise control cam"

I would definetly check the brake pedal switch as mentioned above. The switch does many functions (ie: turn on brake lights, disengage shift lock, disengage cruise control, etc) My switch went bad the other week and would not turn off the shift lock, but everything else was normal. When I got the switch replaced, the cruise control didn't work. Turned out to be a bad switch that was put in. I was told by the deal that it is pretty common for the brake switch to go bad in a car with a lot of miles on it.
Good luck

the brake switch is on the brake arm. get your head on the driver side floor mat and look up. it's got a plunger on it that you can push in, and it should be spring loaded so it will push back.

easy check to see if it works is to look at your brake lights. if they turn on/off when you press/release the brakes then the switch is fine.

The brake switch could still be messed up if your brake lights come on. Like I said, the switch does many things. When mine went out my brake lights worked fine as well as the cruise control disengege, but there was still a short that would let me take the shift lock off.

Just because the indicator light in the dash-mounted Cruise Control button is lit up does not mean the steering wheel mounted buttons are working right.
