well .... if some of you advise against it, due to possible motor damage, then actually i'd rather not. i'm thinking can't get it loose - head over to truck stop that will have a 1" impact gun and compressor & hopefully bribe em with a 20 spot

You don't have to disable the Ignition.. Just pull the Fuel Pump Fuse and there you go! Engine wont start unless you WOT it but that's the point you just need to undo the bolt so a single turn of the key will do... or you can also do it the hard way and unplug each and every COIL packs..

If you have your doubts, try it. I can assure you the engine wont start it will just crank... Only way to start it, its to fully WOT and the engine will stall the moment you let the gas off but that's irrelevant for what you need to do.

Nope, I believe this has been done several times over the course of years in millions of cars... Its the Guetto Style Crank Bolt removal Procedure.

Just what-ever you do try it before proceeding, You don't want your engine to start with a pry bar attached to the Crank Bolt.

DONT turn the key and hold it like you are trying to start it. Just a QUICK turn key to Crank then turn back to stop like 1 second or less blast. Again, DONT hold the ignition like you are trying to star it.

And no, you wont get engine damage from doing it.

If you have a spare key with no security chip you can use it so it wont start but all you need is 1 second crank like fsttyms1 mentioned above.

so are our belts stretch belts & can be taken off by hand or is there a tensioner to loosen in order to remove them &/or do i have to loosen & slightly move the alternator?

We have a Belt-Tensioner.. is directly below the P/S Pump a little bit behind the Alternator.

So much easier to go to a garage and have them hit it with the 1" air gun.
Just be super sure they have it set to loosen. A 1" gun can easily shear the bolt clean off.

Once broken loose they can snug it down to get you home for final removal.

We broke a 3/4" impact trying to do the tb on my TL. Took it to my dad's friend's shop & he put the breaker bar against the frame/front tow hook & was able to really lean on the 2nd wrench then without worrying about it slipping.

^what I did with 1/2" drive. So much flex in our extension here it scared me.

The only thing harder to remove on our cars (from what I've done) is that axle nut, broke a 1/2" drive ratchet and needed to use a 3/4" drive breaker bar. THAT SHIT HANDLES.

imho, all these methods a waste of time. starter method extremely easy 30 seconds or less you're done. no damage to anything. starter method way way easier & straight forward than anything else & as far as i know has a 100% success rate. done on thousands of cars every year. something must be right about it!

I went with the extension+5ft cheater bar method. I had more than 45 degrees of flex until the bolt came loose. Thought I snapped something until I realized it worked. Never tried the starter method, not that it was possible to start my car anyways since I had the IM out already.

Not quite 100%, unfortunately. I've run into a few where it wouldn't work. We bought a 3/4" impact (a good one);so far, so good.

+1 starter method. Quick easy painless. Point the breaker bar forwards and prop the end up then just goose the starter till it's loose.

Starter method is just too easy. It took a chip out of my garage's floor coating though. Totally worth it.

Also broke a 1/2" torque wrench getting it back on.

Agree. you don't want to leave a gap for it to slam. you must set the tool in contact to the direction it spins.
