Cooling Fan(s) 101

I am asking what the normal operation is with a 2002 TL.
There are 2 cooling fans on this car, passenger and drivers side.

I just replaced the drivers side fan. It is working very well now.
My question is about the correct sequence for their operation.

On my car, when the AC is on BOTH fans operate. I understand that is
the correct function. When my AC cycles for what ever reason, BOTH
my fans shut down. I can get both fans to come on if the AC is
off and the car is idled for a long time.

Since there are 2 fans basically operating independent of each other, I am
researching what triggers them on and off.

Since I replaced the drivers side fan, the temperature gauge is rock steady
at 2 clicks below half way.

Thank you.

Im not sure if that is the correct sequence but I have a 99.
Passenger side is condensor fan and works to keep compressor cool in a/c operation.
Driver side is radiator fan and cools coolant.
Both fans may operate when the engine is very hot to help with cooling the engine.

I think the 99's are a lil different but the fans operate the same way. Idk

I believe this happens usually starts to happen around 80f-85f degrees outside.

Check out my recent troubleshooting thread. Lots of good info in there.

Each fan is controlled by it's own relay; the relays each are supplied with unswitched battery voltage through a pair of 20 amp fuses. The relays' control side power is supplied by a fan control module, and is grounded by either the fan control module or the pcm. The fan control module turns on 1 or 2 relays depending on input from 2 or 3 temp switches. These switches close at about 200, 210, or 220 deg.F. If the coolant is above 220 when the car is parked, the fan module can turn on the radiator fan for about 15 minutes. The pcm grounds both relays when the a/c is turned on, by monitoring refrigerant high side pressure. Type s cars use 2 speed fans which give the fan module and pcm more options.
