Changed all my mounts, and still!!!

I was having this problem where when i put the car in reverse while the car is cold and idling above 1k, i would get a "bang" as if one of the mounts were bad. I took it to my mechanic and discovered that 3 of the 5 mounts were bad. I changed the front engine, passenger side engine, and rear tranny mounts. Still i was having the same problem. I said "fuck it, i might as well change the other two" So i took it back a few weeks later, and changed the front tranny and rear engine mounts. STILL i am having the same problem. Its only happening when i put the car in reverse though. Once it's warmed up and the rpms drop, it seems fine. My tranny is also shifting fine when driving. What could it be??? Should i try changing my tranny fluid next?

If its still doing it after the mounts it sounds like the trans is causing it. When was the last time the trans fluid was changed

I changed my fluid about 7-8k miles ago. If it were the actual tranny that was causing it, would'nt it cause it to "bang" all the time, and not just when the car is cold? Is reverse known for giving this problem?

No it wouldnt cause it to do it all the time. when cold line pressure is high. With parts wearing out it would cause things like that.

I have the same problem, my advice is wait a little to warm the car up before you take off. It'll help but definately not a permanent fix.

year miles- salvage title or good title- did you do 3 qts trans fluid change or 3x3
Why would you replace expensive parts on a guess?
If the mech didnt say to replace them- or you never gave them a 2nd look after the first mounts were replaced, how do you know what to do.
Acurazine has so many tips and good people to assist with info...
stop guessing first and asking later!

I replaced the motor mounts, not on a guess, but because they were bad. So i figured that's what was causing the "thump" when i put it in reverse. 4/5 mounts happened to be bad, but im not going to leave just 1 old one there.

It's the tranny. My 99TL did that from day 1 when it was cold out. I had my transmission replaced ~3,000 miles ago and the new one does not do it. Ask a tranny shop if there is anything they can look at.

"I took it to my mechanic and discovered that 3 of the 5 mounts were bad"

you said 3, so I question how the others were diagnosed as its odd to have all fail unless driven with bad mounts for thousands of miles

Just trying to help by getting the facts in order before jumping on the trans failure bandwagon
Trans can give probs for short time or months and months- then act up twice and be perfect for another month
then one day
suddenly
without any prior warning...

is ur drive on a slant cause for some reason when u put the ebrake down on the 2nd gen it still rolls back on the tranny leaving all the cars weight on tranny. if its not that i would say its the tranny

most cars are like that, thats exactly WHY you put the park brake fully on first,
then put it in park. There will be some pressure on the park gear but not as bad.

for those not familiar with TL brakes- the park brake is a tiny set of drum brakes that are inside the center hub of the rear rotor- very small contact area for holding the amount of weight it does.
Not to ever be considered emergency brakes~

Nah, i dont think i have ever even used the park brake. Oh well, i found a site that will ship me a fully rebuilt tranny with 3yr/unlimited mile warauntee, for $1,149.98. Shipping included. I'll just drive mine until it goes kaput, then order the other one.

yo try using the park brake by pressing it down, then put the car in neutral, coming off the regular brakes, then reapply the regular brakes then put it in park. n let us kno if that ever happens again. might save 11 hundred dollars

I'd be worried about this. A couple of my friends own 99 V6 Accords and both of their transmissions were doing the same thing before they died. They would shift into reverse and "bang!" and then one day the bang finally killed the transmission. Apparently a gear inside the transmission broke and Honda replaced their transmissions free.

Was it "banging" all the time though? Mine just does it when the car is cold and reving above 1k. If i give it 5-10 minutes to warm up, it shifts fine. Thats what i dont understand.

The only thing the trans should do when cold is hold 1st and 2nd gear slightly higher rev/longer than when warm.
Thats part of the computer warm up the engine fast programming
You should only warnm it a minute or 2 max in extreme cold- not wait for the temp guage to read normal before leaving the house.
Much of this info can be found in the owner manual or by some reading on acura.com and acurazine! The owner book contains many answers too~

Not during all shifting, just when they shifted into reverse. Didn't matter what time of day it was or if it was cold or warm.

mine does the exact same. dunno about good or bad mounts but i would just let it warm up. because im guessing the bang isnt good for the tranny so i dont mind waiting an extra few minutes rather then pay to rebuild the tranny sooner. besides a few minutes is good for the engine too.

next time you start the car, open the hood and shift into reverse. you can see the top of the engine from the little opening. my engine just jolts cause of the bang!
