Question Can you swap engines?? 99tl -01tl

I just found my buddies car's (2001 civic) engine at a wreaker for 700.00CAD with only 20,000km on the engine and he has way over 140,000. That would be money well spent if it only take 5-8 hours plus the 700.

I was just wondering if the engine in 99TL is EXACTLY the same as the one in the 2001 TL. I know the type-s is different and I know that the trannies are not the exact same either, but with regards to the engine alone.

Theoretically, would someone be able to buy a 2001 TL engine with low km/miles, and drop it into a '99TL without ANY modifications?

what about with slight modifications, I would assume the intake/exhaust/trannie connetion/ and mounts would be in the exact same spots. Any Ideas

Pat what would be the point of this??? I would think that the only difference b/w the 99 and '01 is the tranny being 5 speed. I think that the redline is also set at the same point....

I wouldn't see a benefit to this, unless your engine blows out and you need a new one, then this would be a pretty cost effective way of replacing the engine.

The point is that I can get a hold of a 2001 TL-p engine with 20,000km on it. AND 20,000km is alot less than 128,000 (what I have in my car now).
So for the cost of an engine (less than 2000.00) and 5 hours of labour, I would have an almost brand new engine, in a 5 year old car. Considering I'm not looking to sell this car any time soon, and am looking to drive it for years, it would be a good investment.
I know swapping engines could lower the re-sale value of the car, but if yoiu sell it to anyone that knows what they are talking about they would rather have a newer stock engine.

Back to the origional question - is it possible, or would it take a large ammount of Modifying......?

Another question - A type-s engine wouldn't fit in would it?? too many possible problems to list I imagine - trannie has never had 260hp (stock) applied and if it went it wouldn't be covered under warranty.

Are you sure the engine is in good condition? For the extra $2,000 + that you're willing to put into this mod - you could've just bought a newer TL! hehehe.. yeah yeah - I know - you would've have found one with only 20,000 kms on it anyway! :P

Seriously though, I don't see why it wouldn't work if it's the exact same part as the engine you are currently running - the newer TL-P engine and your own TL-P... *shrug*

why would you want to do that??? our engines are very well balanced and can handle the high milege without worring about high wear and tear. chances are your transmission will go before you break anything on your engine... not to jinks you or anything. not worth the mod. gl

Good point, but regarding "spending an extra 2 grand and get a new TL" 2 grand won't save you 100,000kms when buying a car, at least not a TL.

What about dropping a type-s engine in? for a 35hp gain, and then being able to build on that with h/i/e , it might be worth the work, but alot of work.

Thanks for the replys
