Brake Light
Brake Light
I got a mysterious Brake Light on my dash today. I've never seen it (or even knew it was there). The Brake Light doesn't correlate with my lights (I've checked the turning, high-beams, brake, headlights, etc). What does this mean?
Is it telling me that I have to change the Brake Pads? The lights on my car are all working.
It's a 2002 TL-S in case it makes a difference.
Thanks.

could be low brake fluid, diaphram is not doing its job, low pressure on the lines, various things, doesnt mean it could be the bulbs, if the bulbs r fine, check the lines, and the brake fluid level....any difference in pedal feel?

I thought the BRAKE light just means that parking brake is on. If there was a problem with the brakes wouldnt the ABS light go on? I could be wrong, and I've been having mine go on and off once in a while, brake fluid level is good, no leaks, brakes work fine... Theres a seperate dummy light for brake lights.
may I direct your attention to the owner manual link for futher details about your car
click the year then model of your need

The BRAKE warning light says something is wrong somewhere- abs- level sensor in the cap- pressure imbalnce, park brake ON etc
It does NOT say the pads are low- thats a bwm thing
There are ziners who had same prob and replaced the cap for 35 bucks and problem solved.
There are squeeler tabs on the brake pads make a really bad noise when you push the pedal to alert you.
Does the pedal pressure feel better if you do 2 quick pumps of the pedal- pump once then use as real brakes?-

what about the 3rd break light. it has two bulbs. happened to me and i got stumped untill i took out all the break bulbs and then i found that it was one of the 3rd break light bulbs
brake LAMP simply means one of the brake lights is out.
They come in a 2 pack at parts store for the main brake lights- special fancy kind for the TL~.
May as well replace all 4 since they get equal use and will look off with 1 bright new one on one side- the others will fail soon so get it out of the way today
The 3rd light in the window take a different bulb
Parts store knows which bulbs- or look in the owner book for what you need- That tells you how to get to the bulbs as well for replacement

Thanks folks. It was the right back brake lamp. I replace the one as I dont really care if one is brighter than the others...when the others go, I'll get all the wear and tear out of my factory original bulb. ;-)
BTW- these factory bulbs last a long time...which is a great thing. I bought my TL-S in 2003

You may have corrossion on a bulb connector or a bulb failing
These cars are the right age for needing new tailight bulbs anyway
Using the brakes and signals does cause wear on them......same for headlights
they are getting on hours of use for replacement.
Please do not use this as an excuse to not signal! Uh, I was saving my bulbs for when I really need them!
Replace the bulbs in pairs- they come 2 in a pack- the other side will go soon, and even the differance in brightness is reason enough for The Law to look your way~
