this blows

this sucks my tranny is slipping and my car is salvage so im going to have to say good bye to my NBP tl-s. they wont cover it so i have to let it go before things get worse. i only have 80k on it. the dealer quoted me 4500 for a new tranny. what car should i get next? i was looking into a CL-s 6 speed. my budget is about 10k so i can get another salvage car and my uncle can fix the body for me. any suggestions? tl type s goes for about 3-6k on the auction, cl-s 6 speed goes for about 4-7. what do you guys think?

see, if ur buying a salvage car, most definetly get a warranty from the place u buy it, here in ontario, our small dealerships offer it, i got my tl from a friends dad, and he threw in the powertrain warranty cause we both know the acuras have tranny issues, i would only buy salvage only if i get the powertrain warranty, since everything else is very solid, these TLs r solid, its just that tranny.

btw if anything, look around for a used tranny, i did that for my other tl, and got it for 1500 labor included.

yeah but i dont think they offer buying the power train i dont think. because if they did i would buy it. a tranny is 4500. theres nothing wrong with it just that the gears are slipping. other than that the car is great and i would love to keep it but i cant afford to pay for the new tranny. This is my second car and my first was also a tl-s salvaged nothing wrong with it. ran strong and smooth until some stupid lady ran a red right into me. well i got my car for 5,500 who wouldnt pass on that. and it only have 68k on it.

You're going to pay the max at the dealer- how about an aftermarket transmission shop, like AAMCO? I understand it's a lot cheaper this way, and you can get an extended warranty as well.

Why don't you just fix it? Nobody in their right mind goes to a Honda dealer to pay them for a new transmission. That tranny at a repair shop will probably be 2000-3000, depending on what's wrong with it. Make sure you go to a GOOD shop - get a referral from friends/coworkers who've had work like that done in your area.

If the only problem is the tranny - why not fix them problem instead of spending more on another salvage car and all of the problems that it will come with as well.

How about you join a credit union and get an aftermaket warranty on your car through them?

I agree with Kris, there are plenty of places that will rebuild it really cheap. I had my tranny replace it it was around $800, but that was becasue my Dad knew the guys. But I am sure it is a lot cheaper elsewhere, I was even quoted $2000 at other places. So look around, good luck.

yea im going to try to see if anyone would rebuild my tranny for me. i think the 2nd and 3rd gear is gone. slipping a lot. or maybe ill just buy a used tranny. well this is what my mom said, "why dont you sell your car for 10k and get another car" thats why i said my budget was 10. I also have a buyer waiting. so i plan on getting the oil jet installed and maybe selling it if not im just going to get it rebuilt. and oh yeah i dont know where to get a salvage car only a website called COPART.com which is a salvage bidding website that also has cleaned titled car, from anywhere from stolen, burn, roll over, water flood, to just a clean title, theft, repossession. so yeah it cost money to have an account thats why my uncle has the account he makes most of his money from auctioning cars fixing it and selling it.

oh yeah by the way i love my car thats why i chose to get a second TL. i dont really want to get rid of it. only if there was no tranny problems then our TL's would be the best made. POWER + good SHIFTING= EXCELLENT.

and the reason why i really want to let it go is because its going to start to have problems and the price of my tl is going down really quick. 80k+salvage is a no no. haha price of my car is depreciating so i have to get rid of it ASAP. 10 is a good price because i paid 5,500.

Not sure if this helps but that price you got from the Dealer does not include the $1000 that they give you for your core!

A "new" tranny is $3300 quoted here in Mass, so you subtract $1000 from that. Buy the tranny for @2300 and install it yourself.

You're going to sell a salvage TL with 80k and bad transmission for $10K? I sure hope you're not friends with the buyer....

I thought he said he could get a salvaged one from an auction for:
"tl type s goes for about 3-6k on the auction, cl-s 6 speed goes for about 4-7."

well you say that no one in their right mind would go to honda and i paid 2817.32 with tax and i got the extended 3yr 36k warranty 2yr 24k was free and it took about 3 days? and it was quicker than the week or 10 days i was quoted from the only two shops that would even touch an acura here

only types with a 6mt is the 07 though which will go for around 39k

Or of course you do got Fsstym1,but I don't think you'll be able to pry his car from his hands too easily.

hey so if i do get my tranny replaced by honda i get a warranty for it dont i? and oh yeah i brought it to honda to get it inspected and get the oil jet put in. now its running great. they inspected it and said it was almost as good as new. it was because i was low on tranny fluid. so i decided to drain it and put redline in which was 8 bucks a quart. i dont even remember how many quarts it took. i know i bought around 6 quarts.

a drain and fill usually only takes about 3 quarts..........I heard its good to do it at least two times in between drives.Since your changing the fluid brand this might make sense.

yeah because it did make a big difference, from just regular honda tranny oil to synthetic redline tranny oil a major difference. some guy told me that it helps keep the tranny for a lot longer.

Not on our cars since fluid isnt the problem.
