Base vs Type-S catalytic converter?
Base vs Type-S catalytic converter?
Hello how you guys doing. Just joined the Acurazine forum.
Well...long story short, my 03 TL-S cat got stolen yesterday morning. It sucks
So now I'm looking for a aftermarket one(CARB compliant), did some research and found out Magnaflow has one direct fit for my car, model #4481647. Another one I can find is from Walker 81756.
The Walker one is way cheaper than Magnaflow one, no idea why.
My question is is there a different between the base cat and type-s cat? Is the type-s cat flow better than the base?
Any advice is appreciated.

There is a part # difference 2003 TL:
4 Door TL (NAVI); KA 5AT; 18160-P8F-305
4 Door TL; KL 5AT; 18160-P8E-L01
4 Door TYPE-S; KA 5AT; 18160-PGE-A00
Though not sure, If I had to guess the differences are in length & pipe diameter, maybe even flange fitment?

As long as the Executive Order and part number on the cat match the one listed in the EO for your specific vehicle, you're good. Doesn't matter if another fits, or even works.
You can search the EOs here: https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/AftermarketParts/catalysts
As for Walker vs Magnaflow, the Walker is stamped, the Magnaflow is spun formed. Does that justify the nearly 2x price? I had to replace the cat on my '01 4 years ago with a Magnaflow. It was about $350 back then.
FYI: Magnaflow is listed as Car Sound Exhaust Systems, Inc.
The stole your cat, sis they unbolt it leaving the flanges, or saw it off by cutting it off outside the flanges?

As for the cat, Magnaflow website show the #4481647 is compatiable with 02-03 TL Type-S, but Walker only shows 02-03 TL. I guess both Base and Type-S are sharing a same design cat?

I believed the Type-S exhaust pipe size is a little bigger than the base? Not 100% sure
In CA we are paying almost 10x more for a catalytic converterThumbs down
Yes my is type S. Just play with a digital caliper. Very strait forward job. Keys are band clamps. But you will have to do or pay for welding at one side. If you do it in yours garage I would call it in difficulty 3/10. But I'm carpenter contractor. Maybe a IT nerd would find it more difficult.
That might as well be a photo of mine. The thieving bastards cut it exactly like that. These fuckers need to be caught and castrated. They're so god damn brazen. They stole it in broad daylight from the parking lot of my daughter's high school. The parking lot is right off a busy street too. It's one of the busiest thoroughfares in my town.
You still have comprehensive insurance? I just got the cat stolen from my 2002 TLS. I no longer carry comprehensive, unfortunately, but now I'm thinking about putting it back on after getting my cat replaced.

Yes I do have comprehensive. In fact my insurance paid me a good among of money that I have some $$ left after the car is fixed. I think it's a good thing at the end lolll
