Auto VS. Manual Transmission

I have a 2003 tl type s. I think the engine is a great platform. I have an Auto tranny. I would love to have a manual. All my prior cars that were sports sedans had manual and I loved it. I want to do CAI, Full exhaust, supercharger to my car but am torn because of the auto tranny. I have noticed on most high end sports cars they dont even have the option for manual tranny. Like the audi r8 or the nissan gtr. So maybe its not too bad. What is everyones opinions on this?

Those cars have advanced transmissions though with racing flywheels and clutch systems. The tl automatic transmission is not very good and the 1st gear is terrible. Look at some comparisons of the tl to the g35. Manual to Manual the tl is faster but auto to auto, the g35 blows our doors off from a dig.
Also, you are 2nd gen, this is 3rd gen

is converting my auto tranny to a manual possible? And is it even a realistic task?

yes you can swap out the trans to a manual 6 speed-
its easier to get an entire CL-s engine and trans--will run you $2500-4 grand depending on parts and your level of DIY- there is a conversion harness and more for it now--
plus SC etc.

ck the thread list- the 6 speed coversion is near the top

VERY realistic...
<<<<

i put down an additional 40 hp and 40 tq to the wheels JUST by basically swapping (and a couple of other VERY minor things, but i would still say at least 90% was the swap though)

and yes i would try and find a wrecked 6-speed CL-S if possible (so you can source your parts from there)

but be forewarned not a cheap conversion (especially with an upgraded clutch; might as well instead of buying the factory pos clutch and wanting to upgrade it at a later point anyways), even if you do do it all yourself

I thought with a Type-S motor he doesn't have to do as much work?

What I don't understand about all this, is that if you have the money to do major mods to a 2nd Gen TL, why not sell the 2nd gen TL and take that money plus the money you were gonna spend on all the mods.....and go buy a 3rd gen 6-speed TL ???

I'm not trying to be critical, just asking....

Soo i should have bought a new(er) car for 12-16k <-(on the low side) taken out a loan vs the 5k i spent? Some own the cars, some didnt pay much for the car. This mod was far cheaper for me than to buy new. Plus a car with over 220k with a blown trans isnt worth much. Which is part of the reason many of the swaps are happening.

Also the reason why r8s and gtrs don't have manual cause they accelerate so fast that u won't be able to change the gears fast enough manually ( correct me if I'm wrog)

Some of us have enough money to buy whichever car we want, but choose to keep out first car because we love it!

OK, I wasn't thinking about the blown transmission aspect of it, and an older, non-Type S TL. But are you including paint job, wheels, body kits, etc and suspenion upgrades in that 5K, or was that just for engine & 6 speed swap?

also for the exclusivity of it too, how many 2g TL 6-speeds do you actually see around (minus these forums) (or even modified 2g TL's in general)

i am the only one for a couple of states that i actually know of....

and getting into the hands of people who are willing to modify the car more extensively, instead of keeping it stock

we???

but yes i so badly wanted to keep my old accord, but then my 03 came up for sale

but also you have already taken the hit on the deprecation value of it too, so why do it again if the vehicle is in good shape (and been maintained)

but then again even IF i did have a newer car, i be doing the same mods to it, so that additional money spent on it, is kinda a moot point

I was doing pretty well for myself at 18 years old living with my parents. I had a 2002 Subaru Wrx fully modded. 334whp. I then wanted to tune a larger engine platform and bought a 2003 Audi S4. Upgrading the twin turbos on that platform required taking the engine out and I stopped tuning that car any further. I then bought a 2005 Subaru STI. That was probably the best platform of all to build on and I didnt have any money at that point to do a thing. I would still enjoy getting that car again and building it.

extremely expensive to mod, and they like to break quite often too $$$ (which when they are not broken, they are an awesome car to drive)

they newer STI's are even better... (and iirc lighter too)
