I was always wondering what that antenna is for. I don't have a pic of it, but it is black antenna piece on the rear top roof. My friend's 02 tl-s doesn't have navi, but his tl-s has that antenna, but my 02 tl-s doesn't have that antenna..
I think that antenna looks pretty sweet...
I want to have that too... but what is that antenna for? Also, why my tl-s doesn't have that?

those little roof top ones are for the XM radio or other satelite radio, the NAVI antenna is on the rear deck

 

Oh... so, I need to get xm radio system to get that antenna on the roof? The antenna I talked about looks very identical as the one on Lexus LS430, BMW's... and etc..

 

yeah.. from what you were saying, all i could think of is the satellite radio. some cars come with that stock from the factory, at least the manufacturers that offers satellite radio (which most high-end luxury cars do).. so that's why you see it on lexus', bmw's, and mercs.

 

It's for OnStar.

 

That's what the 04TLs antenna is for (small body colored box). The 02-03 TL had OnStar.

That's for OnStar, with navigation. That's weird that your buddy's '02 TL has it, since OnStar was only offered on the '03 model with navigation.

Maybe he added an aftermarket satellite radio and that's what that antenna is for.

I am not sure if it's for onstar, but my friend's TL-S does not have navi or onstar on his TL-S. Not sure about XM radio though..

Thats the one for OnStar which is only available on the 2003 TLs with Navigation.

It is really weird.. I don't know why my friend's TL-S has that antenna then.. because he got no navi on it.

 

Its not for NAVI, its for OnStar only. The NAVI has its own antenna in the trunk. But OnStar only comes with 2003 TLs that also had navigation.

Not sure why anyone would have that antenna w/o OnStar or NAVI unless they bought it aftermarket for "looks" ... which really makes no sense to me.

 

Perhaps Acura installs the antenna on all cars to simplify the production line?

 

No, because if you have 2 2003 Models side by side one with NAVI and one without, the one without NAVI will not have the antenna.

No 2002 TLs have the antenna either. So it would have to have been added by the dealer or aftermarket.

Could just be that he has a similar looking antenna to the OnStar one for use with XM Satellite Radio or something. Does he have Sat Radio?

I think that antenna gives a little bit of luxury look.. IMO
