Another tranny bites the dust!

Add me to the tranny replacement list.
My '02 TL-s just hit ~35k kms (~20k miles) and the tranny is slipping going from 2nd-3rd gear. Also experience the violent shake at low speed at times.

Thanks.

For now, I'm driving the 1.7 EL as the loaner.
I'm glad it has the seat warmer because the recent Toronto weather has been very cold.
I was told that the tranny will arrive tomorrow morning and hopefully, it will be swapped by tomorrow night.

You too. Did they replace your ECU and fuel pressure regulator as well?

I'm not sure, but according to the invoice, they just replace the whole transmission with the one that is w/ the A/T rebuild program and pressure tested it.

All I know now is that the car feels silky smooth between shifts and it doesn't have the clunk sound when I put it in reverse. It felt like the first day I got the car.

My wife's transmission is starting to slip; she has about 24k on her 02 TL-S. Dealer cannot replicate problem and refuses to change transmission. I just hope that when transmission does eventually die she's not in an accident because they are going to have one hell of a lawsuit if that happens.

You should take it to another dealership, cause that is complete BS if they are not fixing the problem for you.

c3po33,

Also, take the car in when it's cold. I noticed that it slips more when the car's cold and once it's warmed up, it doesn't do as much. The weird thing is that once it slips, it gets bad really quick, like within 2-3 days, in my case.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what are the symptoms of a slipping transmission? I have had Honda products almost all my life but I have never experienced this. I want to know so that I can watch out for it.

Mine slips about once every other week, and it also happens when it's cold out. Just so you know, I have had it slip when I was on the freeway. Nothing bad, thank God, just a quick hiccup.

vandy,
A slipping transmission means that it is slow while shifting between gears. During this time the engine will rev a bit (OR A LOT) until the next gear finally catches.

Hopefully you never have to experience it...

Also, while the engine is reving, it is producing little power to the wheels. It's like being in neutral for a while between gears...

Hope that explains things for you.

Make sure you have documentation to show that the dealer refused to fix the tranny. That way, you have proof if indeed there is a problem later (like an accident).

Unhappy My TL -S feels like it is dragging

I have a question,

What might be causing my TL to feel like it is in a lower gear when it is in 5th gear? The car started to feels sluggish on the road and stiff in the steering. When I accelerate and remove my foot off the gas, I slow down quicker than before. Even on the freeway in 5th gear when I remove my foot from the gas, it feels sluggish, It doesn't drop gears nor is there any hesitation between gears. Oil change is due next week 13k miles on the engine. Could it be a front end alighnment problem. The dealer "couldn't reproduce nor find" the problem. Any suggestions is greatly appriciated.

It's getting a bit too close for comfort. I have 8k on my 2003 TL-S, but my neighbor just bought a new 2003 TL-S and after only 400 miles, his transmission gave up!

Thankfully, mine was made a good 4 months after his.

As you can see from my post above on 1/21 wife wife's tranny is slipping. Yesterday she took it in for 30,000 miles service. She tells the guy that all she wants is an oil change since her transmission is slipping and they're doing nothing about it, why should she spend $250.00 on the 30,000 miles service. Service tech tells her he'll check it out again. He calls her about 4:30 pm and tells her: "Your transmission is slipping we're going to put a new one in." She wanted to say no sh*t, I've been telling you this for over 3 months now. Well now she's pissed b/c Enterprise (her dealer does not give Acura loaners anymore, they used to) gave her a Sebring that she says suck big time. She says it will be her last Acura if they don't change the loaner policy.

So another tranny bit the dust, our Vin ends in 10599 for those compiling the list of failed trannys.

I've heard of people going through several trannys, is it true that Acura finally did fix the problem last May or could this new tranny also go. Thanks for any replies.

sorry to hear about the tranny. the loaner policy unfortunetly is not an Acura policy, it is a dealer policy. every dealer is different. if the work will take long, make a fuss to get an upgraded loaner, most dealers will do this from what i've seen.

can't comment on whether the tranny prob is really fixed until I hit ~30k with no probs
