Acura TL 2000 Timing Belt

Hello,
I currently have about 80K miles on my timing belt. A mechanic has told me to get it replaced with balancer belt, water pump, tensioner and cam seals at 105K - 120K miles.

Has anyone ever heard of any situations where the timing belt has snapped or broke before 100K miles on Hondas or Acuras.

Thanks.

Factory says 7 years 105k miles and replace everything
Many members have gone well past that with no issue
If its the first time the spark plugs and coolant are getting changed- I would do it on time
Better safe than broken belt= bent valves, broken engine

If you drive like an escaped mental patient in a stolen car
You may want to do maitenance ahead of schedule, THAT kind of driving ~COULD~ cause extra wear and early breakage!!!

I heard though that if your timing belt breaks your going to be able to tell and as long as you stop driving you wont really do damage? Is this true or not?

False. Belt breaks= motor breaks.

I don't know alot but my service advisor said in so many words that when the timing belt goes the engine begins to shread immediately (bend valves, broken pistons) and equals big time repair dollars ($2,000 - $3,000), towing charges and repair time. I also learned 2nd gen TLs have an "Interference" engine versus a "Non-interference" engine. The difference between the tow is the proximity between the valves and the pistons. Either case the car is broke and you're stranded.

I replaced my timing belt at 122,000 miles (99TL). I did not intentionally wait that long and was very lucky it did not snap after passing 105,000 miles. Granted I do not drive like an escaped mental patient.

I think in severe weather states (really cold <10degrees or really hot >90degrees most of the time) the recommended change is earlier. That and if you drive like the aforementioned mental patient.

Recommended service at $400 - $700 (one day service) versus $2,000 - $3,000 (multiple day service). Pretty easy decision especially since the ol' TL held up this long, may as well put some money into it and drive it another 100,000.

I guess I'm one of the "lucky" one's too... My '99 TL has 152,000 miles on it and I'm still on my 1st belt. I just came back from the dealership, and the mechanic (who gets me parts at cost and does the work for me) told me I need to have my t belt changed along with some accessory belts and a water pump... I also need 3 motors mounts. I was thinking about just getting a new car and skip on the work, but I'm gonna get it done and see how many more miles I can get out of her before I take on another car payment.

There are many members who are far past the recommended mileage to change the timing belt with no problems, but to each his own. I'll change mine somewhere around 105K but I'm not stressing it. As for price, the cheapest I've seen it at a dealer was $800 so I'm guessing the $400-$700 range is by independent mechanics.

I'm not suggesting this, but I actually went about 110k with my timing belt on the 2000 TL. It was fine, and didn't even have a nick in it. The second one went another 70k. Wow, now that I think of it, that's a lot of driving... Oh well --

Just a small investment in the TL beats any new car payment and the probs the new cars have. Gen 2 rocks!!! Many over 200,000 miles and going strong
Maybe throw a UR crank pulley on while its all apart!
www.unorthodoxracing.com

Private shops always beat dealer price because the high overhead of dealer raises the labor rate.
Small place- talk to the owner in person, ask mechanic questions directly, thats worth a lot to me! The dealer does excellent warranty trans replacements in my opinion and should be kept to that repair!

On the old Integra 175K miles on timing belt then grenaded the motor

My mom's TL just had the 60K service done (fucking rip-off) and the service advisor said it may be time to change the belt soon since we've had the car for 7 years (this September). He said it would cost around $900!!!

My mom's pretty easy on the car and she's only putting on about 8000 miles per year, I thought it was still way too early to change it out. What do you think, Kris?

My mechanic quoted me $970 parts and labor to do my t belt, water pump, accesory belts, 3 motor mounts and a tune up using platinum sparks plugs. All parts would be geniune Honda/Acura. What do you guys think?

What's a UR crank pulley??? What does it do?

Im more Leary of age than miles. Id be more cautious with age than miles. Would it be safe to go a few more years? Most likely. Id look into a independent shop or the honda dealer. You could easily cut a few hundred$$ off that quote

Not bad for all of that service. I wouldnt want the plugs. Id stick with iridium.

UR pulley is a light weight pulley. It will give 8-10 hp and make the car feel more lively

I'd be in the same situation, my car is going to be 7 years old soon but I only got 60K miles.... Lately I am not putting to many miles (6-8K per year).
I talked to my mechanic (not the dealer), and he said the same thing "few more years should be OK, but after that I'd replace it".

What is the list of OEM parts that I would need to buy ?
