Actual Tranny Problem
Please vote. It keeps making such a scare, it would be nice to know who and how many are actually having problems. If you are having problems, please say what year car and type of car.

Since having my tranny replaced back in January, I haven't had any problems thus far! I had my original tranny replaced at 7k and it was about 8 months old. I am now at 12k and so far so good (knock on wood)!!

Hmm.....I wonder what the lemon laws are in Southern California? does anyone know? I really don't want to read that really really long web page about it. I really want to know about this. Very curious. As I only had my car for a month..and I only have 1170 miles. But who knows....I worked my tranny quite alot since I bought the car. haha, I really want to say lemon... :p so I can get another TL-S...7500 miles is the lowest I've seen with a blown tranny. other then the guy with the new 03 TL-S that broke in wat? 2 days?

Tranny replaced on 2002 TL-S, purchased 4/24/01.
1st tranny replaced in July, at about 8500 miles
2nd tranny replaced in Dec., at about 26500 miles
I'm not at about 35500 miles and fully expect the 3rd tranny to go sometime soon. I'm not experiencing any trouble yet but since some 2003s have already experienced problems, I see no reason why mine shouldn't. I've completely lost faith in Acura. I still love my car but an S4 is starting to look awfully tempting.

My tranny broke today!!
Symptoms: hit accelerator at about 20-25 and rather than upshift to 3rd it revved high as in neutral. Repeated events that also recurred in sportshift mode. Turned off engine, restarted and major rev problem went away but lost clean shift especially 2nd to 3rd.
Dealer was great in taking it in right away and providing loaner. They were able to replicate the problem and now we wait for the zone office to tell them how to handle it.
Interesting that they hadn't heard of this event before......
I guess some dealers choose not to review this site.
I sure am disappointed in Acura. Mine is a 2002 TLS about 10 months old with 14,300 mi of mostly highway driving.
Until today, I was absolutely thrilled with this car and now doubt I'll buy another in the future.

I can't seem to vote...it keeps saying that my session isn't valid...
In any case, my '02 TL-S is in the shop awaiting a new tranny. It started slipping out of 5th around 15k miles, and then one day it did it 7 times on an Interstate trip...scary!

The first time my tranny went, I didn't notice anything until all the warning lights came on. Then the car would not downshift properly when trying to pass. It would rev higher but then drop and go back into the same gear. Much like it was just slipping out of gear.
When my second tranny went out, for a couple of weeks I noticed that it was slipping a little between 2nd and 3rd, much like a bad manual shift -- when you give it too much gas before you've let the clutch all the way out. That was the first sign. When I started hearing grinding noises, that's when I took it in.

Tranny's death confirmed
The dealer confirmed my tranny is gone. New one on order and scheduled for replacement next week.
They've been kind. I'm bugged at Acura over this but pleased with the dealer response.
I've posted symptoms and details earlier in this thread but remembering back over the last few weeks I'd say that overall some shifts haven't been as smooth as when new. I clearly remember thinking when new that this was the cleanest shifting automatic I've owned -- even compared to the J30 and I30t I'd previously had.
There was that one clunk a couple weeks ago when it seemed to jump up a gear after slowing to a near stop. But then nothing until the actual failure.

Some ways to know your tranmission is about to go.
-If it holds RPM when shifting
-If it jumps to a high RPM when shifting
-If the shift is slow
-If the shift is balky;clunky
-If the shift is slow, balky;clunky
-If engine speed rises faster than vehicle speed in 4th or 5th gear
-If you hear grinding
-If you hear a high pitched squeal
-If your RPMs suddenly rises in any gear at sready cruising
-If your tranmission refuses to change gears
-If your tranmission doesn't want to go into a certain gear
-Delayed downshifting
-Lurchy downshifting
-Missed shifts
-Confused shift mapping
If you only experience this once, take it to a dealer. One is all it takes to create some, possible severe damage. If you are in doubt, take it to a dealer. If you have a feeling that it's going to go, take it to a dealer. Chances are, you might be able to save the transmission by replacing the solenoids or replacing the transmission control module. Worst or best, how ever you look at it, would be a transmission change with new solenoids and a transmission control module.
Here are some great items to prolong transmission life:
-Redline transmission fluid
-Transmission cooler
-Valve body modification
If you dealer thinks your delusional, there is that 800 number you can always call to send a complaint to Acura. For those that had a new transmission, did you dealer give you new solenoids and transmission control module? It seems that most of you go through your 2nd transmission quicker than your original.

Hmmm....
I have a whopping 550 miles. I've played with the sportshift a little, mainly to see how the things work. I've visited north of 6k only twice... ok, maybe 3 times
buuuuut.... I've noticed the kinda sloppy downshift coming to a stop. Then today at a full stop, the engine went from a little below 750 to a little above 750 and it felt like someone walked up behind me and just pushed the car a little.... ummm.... should I be concerned or am I being a little hypocondriac? I'm taking the car in to the dealer for some paint touchups so I just might ask the service manager to take her for a little spin just in case, yes?

If you had A/C on, this is probably the compressor coming on. That's my recollection of the push reported last year.
