99TL & Trans is shot.

My parents own a 99TL, the trans was replaced once and now my father said it was slipping and banging into gear. I know this has been discussed a million times on here, I did search. My question is, I know that it's well over the 7 year mark, but the car only has 93K on the odo. What are the chances of Acura replacing the trans? The only reason I ask is because it's still under 100K. Has anyone had any luck with a situation like this? Any insite would be appreciated. Happy New Year!

you might be able to bargain with the dealer and get part of it payed for or even the whole thing replaced for free. all i can say is talk to them or better yet wait until someone else posts and gives another suggestion. read the trans fail thread i know it has been talked about in there some where im pretty sure. good luck and i hate waiting for the day my trans fails, i know its going to suck.

Go to your dealer and talk to the Service MANAGER, not the Service Writer. If you are cool headed and nice about everything and have been a loyal customer over the years, I could see them helping out with the replacement.

The 7 year 109k warranty on applies to 5spd tl's aka 2000+. So either way you wouldnt be covered by it. But as everyone else said you might be able to get a discount. Honestly if I were you id look elsewhere for a tranny, ebay, junkyards, the 4 speeds are known to be alot less problematic than the 5 speeds so you should be ok with a used one. Otherwise you'll be dumping in at least 3 grand into a car thats worth 6 grand all together.

Thanks for the info. I know the 99 was covered under the warranty for the trans. They sent us a letter years ago about it and it was replaced once under the warranty. I was hoping maybe my father would just have to pay for the labor or some sort of deal like that. Hopefully they'll help us out considering I purchased my 05 TL there and we've had our cars serviced there.

Papaman677,
When was the last time your dad replaced that tranny? It should have 1yr/12K mi. warr. on it AND it's always have a Good Will even if it passed that time frame.
Your TL is still under 100K mi, go and speak with the service manager nicely to see if he can help you out of this situation.
Bottom line, he (Serv. Mgr.) should pick up the phone, call Acura head quarter (in CA) and depend on how much "he's nice with you" that he should answer/cover all the questions they asked before they can give him a "green light".
In my case, my TL was 8yrs old & 105K mi. when they replaced my tranny (free). Then I brought it back 8 months later because it made a loud noise when I put it to Park (D to P). Of course, they couldn't find it right away, it's an intermit problem, but later once they found it... another free tranny replacement which is recently (9/2008) since it's under 1yr/12Kmi warr.
Good Luck and Happy New Year.

The car is 10 years old, I doubt they are going to do anything. You could try, but it looks like you will have to pay out of pocket for the new trans.

The 109,000 mile/7 year 9 month warranty applies to the 1999 TL also. Of course, every 1999 TL has already hit the 7 year 9 month limit but they might cut some slack for cars that are still under the 109,000 mile limit. And some 1999 TLs that were outside of both limits have received goodwill coverage. IIRC, one forum member was able to get full coverage.

And, as mentioned above, check to see if the replacement transmission might still be under its own warranty.

As mentioned by 6MTUA5, ask to speak to the Service Manager at your local dealership.

You can also call Acura's national Customer Care group to see if they might be able to help.

Spend some time reading the Tranny Failure Thread for some other ideas:

Good luck!

first the acura dealer has to diagnose it as failure, then you can work with the service manager -letting them know you have bought another car from them- this car has been serviced there for many years, and most important--they did the trans before
WHEN was the trans replaced?
-
so its own warranty may apply regardless of the car miles/year-
and acura can work goodwill any way they want

ASSUMING the trans was replaced by an acura dealer- then it should be easy to get a low(free to $500) to medium pay (2000) from you to get it replaced again.
They know some of the replacement units fail and are good about it

Be positive and nice- that gets help better than ~this POS crapped out and I want one free now!!!!!!!! with a brand new loaner car!!!
