99 TL J32 A2 Engine & 6 Speed Trans Swap Complete!
Well, I'm back and the swap is complete!
Before I begin, a HUGE thank you goes out to Bill & Jason Boyle the father and son team that own Boyle Performance Tuning in Shingle Springs, CA. Finding these guys was a stroke of luck and the job could not have been done by a more capable shop. These guys know EXACTLY what they are doing and just happen to be Honda/Acura performance specialists that love the J32 A2 engine. Want more luck? These guys are located just a few miles from CT Engineering and have a great working relationship with one of the mechanics that no longer works for CT but helped engineer the Comptech Supercharger (a great guy named Shad). Moral of the story? I am now the absolutely stoked and proud owner of a SUPER HYBRID 99 TL (AKA the Rocketship!) that houses a J32 A2 engine from a 2003 CL-S with the 6 speed manual transmission. And to top it off, this power plant has a Comptech Supercharger strapped to it's back. To quote Bill Boyle, "this thing is a beast!"
The story started with me finding a wrecked 03 CL-S at a salvage yard in Salem Oregon. It had 92,000 original miles on the J32 engine and the 6 speed manual trans. The guys at the salvage yard (G&R Automotive) were great to deal with. They sent me the entire engine on a pallet still attached to the subframe, along with the axles, the steering column, and the complete shopping list Fstty posted in his "sticky conversion thread." Thank you Fstty!
When the engine arrived from the salvage yard it came with a HUGE surprise. It had Comptech headers on it!!! Can you say $1,200 bonus?!!! Yes my friends, the salvage yard Gods smiled upon me... big time!
The end result? I have a brand new car that just happens to look like my old car! This thing has 246 ft. lbs. of torque and 282 hp at the wheels!!! Bill and Jason Boyle talked me out of messing with the engine's internals (and I'm grateful for it). The engine has all stock internals, Comptech headers, a brand new OEM clutch (fly wheel, clutch, and pressure plate), and a Comptech Supercharger that was fine tuned by one of the mechanics that designed it. The SC is operating with the original map clamp intended by Comptech, and the above stats were achieved with only 3 lbs. of boost using the OEM injectors. I do have the CL-S high boost pulley but am told that I will need to install larger injectors to have the SC function at maximum potential (if I ever feel the need).
Right now, 1st and 2nd spins the tires no problem with no clutching. So, I don't know if I'll ever need to take this further. But who knows. It's always nice top have options, right?
I have posted some pics to help tell the story. I owe many thanks the the members and moderators on this board for not only pointing me in the right direction, but actually talking me into the 6 speed conversion. I couldn't be happier with the end result. I love this car all over again!
The biggest thanks however, goes to Jason and Bill Boyle at Boyle Performance Tuning. If anyone is ever interested in any type of performance work in Northern California, these are the guys to call. Thanks guys, I cannot endorse you enough. My car is frickin awesome!
Please take a close look at the engine BEFORE and AFTER Boyle Performance Tuning got a hold of it. This was a car from the Northwest Coastal region and it was exposed to salty conditions. Jason and Bill Boyle absolutely TRANSFORMED the engine and trans into super sexy machines. When it was all said and done, I spent right around $12,000 - all in (parts and labor). Money well spent considering the outcome!

Congrats EastBayTL on following through on the dream.
You'll never regret your decision to give your TL the most awesome drivetrain combo that should've been available from the factory day one.
Have some fun and enjoy the sleeper while it snores and growls at the wannabes.....!

Numbers seem about right with te low boost pulley. He should get a set of ported runners and the apex I exhaust is to small in diameter. A set of ported runners, ported intake manifold or 09 tl intake manifold, and a larger diameter exhaust should put him over 300 whp

Man, that's like giving the ol TL a heart transplant from an olympic triathalon champion. Not just a pacemaker, ha...hah !!! Bravo to ya, bro.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Much appreciated. I love driving my car again.
Dave, I purchased the TL with 3,000 miles on it from the dealer in 99. The $12k I spent looks like this:
$2,700 - full swap parts list from donor car (shipping from Oregon to Cali included). I got damned near the entire car: engine, trans, clutch slave cylinder, hydraulic lines, pedals, steering column, ECU, guage cluster, two under dash harnesses, complete console assembly, complete E-brake assembly, complete shifter assembly, countless misc. parts, and let's not forget the free Comptech headers and down pipe!!! I still can't get over what a phenomenal score that was.
$2,300 - complete factory clutch kit, new engine harness, water pump, timing belt, main seal & plate, SC intake modifications by CT (the CL-S intake elbow is discontinued. The elbow that came with my used SC was for an Accord and had to be taken to CT Engineering to be cut and shaped and was custom made to fit), misc. parts
$1,600 - new CL-S radiator (mine had small leaks), new 51R battery, new standard CT SC pulley, new CT fuel pressure regulator, new CT Ice box, new CT map clamp, new shifter boot, new consloe cup holder, new engine bay shroud
$500 - new cooling fan (one of mine was broken), misc. supercharger parts
$6,000 - Labor
Now that I've added it all up, it looks like the job cost $13,000 all in (not $12,000). That's what I get for sharing!
Assman: The shifter knob you saw in the pic is the stock knob that came out of the wrecked 03 CL-S. I have since changed it out for a polished metal 6 speed tear drop shifter knob from Zerg I picked up new for $40 on Ebay. Now that's what I'm talking about. Oddly enough, I actually like the feel of it much more than the stock one. Besides, a new stock leather shifter knob from Acura is $320.00. That's just crazy pricing! After paying $300 for a new leather shifter boot from Acura I just couldn't stomach paying that much for a frickin shifter knob.
Stephen; I'll run the ported runners and intake suggestion by the Boyles and try to rough out a cost benefit analysis. Might be something I do once I get used to driving it the way it is. I definitely appreciate the tip.
I have to tell you guys, this thing hauls ass the way it is. But who knows, if I decide to port the runners and intake I may just go ahead and get larger injectors and throw on the CL-S high boost pulley that came with the SC all at the same time. It's nice to know that I have another 20 to 50 hp available if I ever get bored (and find the need to spend more money!).
It's worth noting that Boyle Performance Tuning did this entire whole job in three weeks, and they would have had it done sooner if getting parts didn't slow them down. These guys literally tore the whole car apart and put it back together again... correctly.
Here's some more pics of the magic Jason & Bill Boyle performed.

The next thing I want to do is have her painted Mercedes Benz Diamond White. Here she is with the stock paint job. Definitely a sleeper.

By any chance you still got old 6speed CL wire harness??
I needed the reverse harness pigtail piece only. I did make a pigtail but it real not working. It sometime cause the check engine to come ON an stay ON until i rest it. The reason I know that the problem is b/c, sec I put it into reverse light would just turn ON

Nice. But you should have done a little more homework on the clutch, you should have gotten the Aasco light weight flywheel instead of the heavy oem dual mass

I'm considering making a 6 speed swap DIY. Full bolt by bolt video series. Everything is insanely simple even for beginners, so I hope to help some people out. The only issue is that the wiring will change a little for each setup (various model years, navi or not, type-s or base).
Do you know how they rewired the car?

[QUOTE=assclown;14385359]Thanks, I finally got on a computer (I was on mobile) and saw a close up of that shift knob and noticed it had some wear on it. I ended up ordering this one for less than $30.
Assclown: I really like that shifter knob you found. Nice job! Especially since it connects the leather boot to the bottom of the knob. Where did you pick that one up? I will buy one just to have the boot connect to the bottom of the knob.

I can tell you that the vocabulary goes beyond my pay grade quickly. That's why I am so glad that I found Boyle Performance Tuning. This father/son team really knows what they are doing. The son is a Honda/Acura Factory Master Technician and the dad is a retired engineer. I suggest reaching out to them. These guys have a license for absolutely everything performance related. Here is their number: Business: 530-350-8110, Cell: 408-391-6147

I don't have it yet, I found that pic on the CL side. I got it for $29.04 or something like that from hondapartsunlimited. It is a shift knob from a 2010 TL 6spd. I'm excited to get it.
