60,000 mile tune up - worth it?

The dealer is trying to get me to do the $695 60k tune up. I was planning on an oil change and the tires rotated, but wasn't ready for $700....is this something I should do to keep the car running well?

It's a 2002 tls

thanks

So just get the tranny fluid changed, and what else. Is that it? I heard changing the tranny fluid can sometimes accelerate the process of the tranny shitting out

Not quite true. That scenario is most common with vehicles having a serviceable transmission filter. Hondas do not, as they only have a coarse transmission "screen" filter.

What often happens on domestic vehicles and the newer Toyota "U" series units is that a transmission fluid exchange is done at a very high mileage, such as 150K+. The filter/fluid have never been changed before. New fluid cleans up some sludge/varnish buildup, and clogs the filter entirely. Transmission cokes and dies, as there isn't enough fluid flow. If the filter had been changed, then the problem could've been prevented.

But for you, don't worry about it. Just drain/fill with Honda Z1 or Amsoil ATF and call it a day.

Yep, unless you strip the fill or drain bolt while trying to remove it.

I just called Gary Force Acura in the Nashville, TN area and I was quoted a price of $350 for the 60k check up. I think the only thing I need done is the tranny change. They said that is $45. A radiator flush is $70 and an alignment is $89. Do this prices seem pretty fair?

No....you can drain and fill tranny yourself for 25.00, just test antifreeze to see if it is good....if so why change it? And why get an alignment unless you need one

Those prices are reasonable, at least by Nashville standards...

I'd consider draining the radiator only, and refilling with new Honda Type II or Prestone Universal 50/50 Ext. Life Premix at least every 5-yrs given the ease and minimal cost. It's not reliable to test the coolant as you can only measure the concentration and pH. The pH isn't always accurate as you do not know the status of the corrosion inhibitors. A gallon of Prestone 50/50 Ext. Life Premix is about $9.

i would only do the things that need to be done.alignment isnt one of them if its fine

:side note: my radiator fluid was 200,000 miles old and was fine in my tl.

I just got a quote for the 60k maintenance at Montgomeryville Acura (Montgomeryville, PA...just north of Philly) and it was around $350 as well for an '02 TL-S.

Where are you that its costing $695...and are they doing more than what is scheduled in the manual?

It's not going to void any warranty. But, if your trans. takes a shit after 100K miles and you go crying to the dealer for them to pay for it, it helps if you've done all your scheduled maintenace. If you're not going to spend the money for upkeep, why should the dealer/Acura spend any money helping you out beyond your warranty period?

60000 service

I am due for my 60000 service and i have read about getting the tranny fuild changed. I had the tranny replaced at around 38000 miles. I was wondering if they chage the transmission fluid during tranny replacement. If so do i still need to get the tranny fluid replaced or can i wait a little longer?
Thanks

There is no "tune-up" @ 60k miles. Look in your owners manual. There are services due but NOT a tune-up.
