That's gotta be some sort of record. Can anyone top 4??? That just sux, because every one of those 4 represents a breakdown and loss of use of the car while thay work on it. I really hate it for you. I don't blame you for wanting to get another car. Acura should be ashamed of themselves.

I think there is a time limit though so its not that cut and dry. either way it sucks and I agree that you should get rid of the car and maybe file a complaint. Sorry for your headache and shitty experience.

Oh and I think the current record is 7 trannies, but the guy has one of the fastest CLs and has plenty of mods including nitrous.

As long as the first trannys failed within the 18,000 and yr period you still qualify. Call a lemon law laywer...

Here in NJ its 18000 or 2 yrs... I have 29k in less than 2 yrs. Since my first tranny went at 12000 I qualify...

I do not know if it's this board or AW, but Copland has a story on how he was successful in getting a new car. Do a check. Note my car is also on it's 4th transmission but it has high mileage, that is, 90,000 miles.

You might also want to PM PeterUbers. He went through 3 trannies and was successful, after much complaining and threatening, in making Acura get him a 2004 TL. Search for "BBB" and user "PeterUbers" to find his thread.

I was successful getting a repurchase of my 2003 TL-S after my endless transmission issues last month through BBB. I was very pleased with the process, and of course, with the result. PM me and I would be glad to help you with your case. I strongly recommend BBB. They were great--it is binding on the manufacturer (but not on you), so it is a good first step before Lemon Law. If BBB doesn't work, go lemon law. And it's free.

With all the time, money and mods you have, do the lawyer thing then just a built tranny from VR.
Next time mine goes out, that's the route I'm going.
I LOVE my 03, and I'm not going to let Acura screw me again or make me hate the thing enough to dump it.

Tell me about it. I just got back from Mission Viejo Acura, they seemed alright, kinda small time but oh well. They gave me a TSX as a loaner, beter than the tl-p and rsx at my dealer. Just hope they're as cool about my headers and tranny cooler as my dealers' service manager is.
Thats right #5 is being installed next week! It's so wierd that freeway driving seems to bring out the design flaw more than city miles. the first owner drove all freeway miles also and he suffered though 1 failure at 27k mile then tradered it in shortly afterwards. where i bought it at an unbelievable price,(2gs below WHOLESALE)
With the execption of 1 tranny making a wierd thumpping noise and being replaced on that only, all the trannies have lasted 25k miles almost on the dot.

Wow..that's nuts...Sorry to hear that.
I have a TLP and I can't seem to break it with whatever driving style I do....I guess it doesn't have the kind of power as the TypeS to push the tranny over the edge? I do hope it breaks before the 100K is up though...4th tranny...amazing!!!

oh are you the foolish ex owner of my TL-S that bought the car new for 35k and then traded it in on a DODGE at a 15k dollar loss only 1 year later??????????

4th Tranny...I doubt if a new car is going to help. Did you ever consider that you might be driving the car, and transmission in way's that it's not designed for. From what I've seen, most people who have tranny problems also have extensive mods. Not all, but most, and I would wage money that those who have tranny problems drive very aggressively. This car, and transmission was never designed to race. It's a luxury sport sedan, and should be driven accordingly. That doesn't mean racing every day, and just beating the sh*t out of the car. I've had 4 TL's, and have had NO problems with any of the transmissions. Maybe I'm lucky, but I don't race my car's. I drive them fast at times, but don't abuse the car.

These are details of my win against Acura. Mike_E. faired better than I did against Acura in that he got a full buyback, although he took his case to arbitration, and I did not. That may have made the difference (among other things, he's also a highly skilled communicator thanks to his line of work).

All those of you sitting on three or more trannies are FOOLS not to fight acura and gain your own victory. Do not lament any longer, and do something about it, even if the process will cause you some inconveniences regarding your time and daily schedule.

That is garbage. The tranny is defective period. Defective as in recalls like the Odyessy and MDX but they won't do it. There are more people stock here than modded with tranny issues. My friends who love their Acura TL/CLs are not racers or car enthusiasts. They thought they were buying a reliable car. So much for that idea.
The issue blew up in Acuras face when a LA TImes editor was driving his/her TL and the tranny went beserk on the freeway. Next thing we know, they extended the warrenty to 100k miles. They refused to acknowledge the issue until then.

The tranny seems not to be built to handle 260hp. Not to mention not 1 but 2 overdrive gears.

For all those who went in for new trannies:

Did they actually give you a new transmission or did they just re-built it? And are you sure?

I will be contacting a lawyer on Monday but am scepticle because of the current mileage on my car, however the first 1 did go at 27k.
I would be happy w/ a buy back at current RETAIL price and then a atcost price on a new 6 speed.

Mine was "remanufactured & upgraded" including a new computer. Yhey claim to not use
new trannys. They supposedly bought all the old ones they could from Japan and upgraded them.

LOL, why does it take 4 tranny replacements to be considered as part of the Lemon Law? I don;t know why anyone would keep the car after the 2nd tranny went...that's all I could tolerate and my Acura dealer bought the POS back!
