Question 4 speed versus 5 speed

How much better is the 4 speed versus the 5 speed? Does it make the car faster? I have a 1999 with four speed and was wondering if it is worth trading it in for a 2000 five speed?

I have never driven the 4 speed TL.. But if I were you, I would hold out for the 2002 5 speed Type-S!

I would also wait if I were you for the new TL-S.

BTW, why do you want to trade in your 99 TL?
Because I have a 99 TL and was thinking about trading it in for the TL-S but I am going to wait. Personally I don't think it's worth it. You will be losing a lot of money depending on your car.

One major difference between the two is in sport shifting....1 -> 2 is automatic in 2000+ 5-speed vs. 1999 4-speed is manual.
Also, I think there is better "USABLE" power going to the wheels in the 2000+ 5-speed trannys. Even though all of our TL's is rated at 225hp stock, 2000+ TL's have more power at the wheels! Dyno proven!
It's all personal choice. I for one, is going to wait alittle, I'll lose too much money right now!

Not unless you really want DVD navigation and side airbags too. I'd wait for the Type-S also. It's too much money to lose if you're not getting a BIG upgrade.

I thought there was no chance of the Type-S coming in a 6 speed. I was told it's the same 5 speed that we have now. Did I miss some announcement?

the 5spds are .5 seconds faster to 60. thats a pretty big deal

and theyre better on gas

4 gears is pathetic...i have to rev at over 3K to cruise at 140km/h

when i drove it cls, it was much more reassuring just knowing that i had an extra gear to play with

acttually it just means the gear ratio is taller on the 5 speed making it overdrive.

I have both 4spd and 5Spd 3.2... this are the difference that I felt between them

The 5spd seems to have better low end power, especially in 2nd and 3rd gears. While at 2K RPM, once you give gas, the rpm just jumped up, and picked up the engine speed, and give you the torque right the way.... The 4spd won't do that... If you give gas at 2K in 2nd, don't expect it to go anywhere until 3.5K+.... as far as high speed... I MAXed out 142MPH on the 5spd CL, it was pulling on 4th at 5.5K and just stay there forever, not picking up anymore speed or RPM... so if you looking to go top speed, 4 or 5 gears will be about the same...

I do NOT think the 99 4spd are too slow either (yes, some).. one thing i like about the 4spd was... at 50mph, once I full throttle... The gear jumped from 4th to 2nd DIRECTLY, and give you that pulling respone right the way... but on 5spd, it jump from 5th to 2nd, 3 gears.. and that didnt FEEL as much torque as 4spd.
