2000 stock radio problem
2000 stock radio problem
I have just joined the forum and I the proud owner of my late father's 2000 Tl.
Has anyone noticed that once the radio warms up, it takes an inordinately long period of time for the CD player to either start playing or skip tracks? Could this be a stereo defect of simply a case of a dirty laser pick up?
Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about your unfortunate gain
That is a fairly common problem, especially with copied CDs. I have found that if you put in a laser lens cleaning CD, it will correct the problem only briefly. Someone here said that they don't have that problem when they use high quality blank CD-Rs. Examples given were TDK and Maxell. I have yet to try these high quality CD-Rs, but plan on doing it soon.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have noticed the problem with commercial, original CDs. I haven't even tried CD-Rs.
My late Dad was a pretty heavy smoker so I wonder if tar, nicotine and soot are the root of the problem.
I should mention that I do not get any CD error codes when this happens. The track number changes but the music doesn't start for 5-15 seconds.
Will the dealer clean it in any more effective fashion than I can?

If it's under warranty, bring it to the dealer and let them clean it out. If it's not under warranty, go to Radio Shack and get the CD LENS cleaner disc and give it a few tries. Commercial CDs should pick up pretty quick, so there is definitely a problem.

I have tried Maxell blank CDR's and they take a long time to seek to the correct location on the track to start playing... The first track plays right away but every other track takes a while for the laser to find the correct location.
I have tried CD's that are original and they seek to the track and find it perfectly..
I find that if I try to pick one of the last tracks on a burned CDR I will drive for like 3 or 4 minutes until the track starts playing. Once the track starts playing it is fine though and doesn't skip or anything...
I would reccomend a different brand of CDR's besides Maxell...
Does anybody have a brand of blank CDR's that doesn't do this????

Welcome to the forum & very sorry to here about your father.
I have a 2000 TL & have not notice any problem with the radio or CD player. I have the CD Changer mounted in the trunk & use that mostly.I do however use the single player when I want a change from the normal CDs stored in the changer. I am one of a few that are satisfied with the stock system in the car. I am planing on adding to it XM SATELLITE RADIO sometime soon.

I also have this problem and have not found a solution. However, I was talking to a friend at work who had the same problem with his Explorer. He said that for burned CDs it works if he burns them at a slower speed, such as 4X. I plan to try this when I get a chance.
Stock Radio Problem Solved
I brought my 2000 TL into Acura of North Toronto yesterday and they agreed to replace the stereo under warranty. When I mentioned my problem, the Service Manager seemed to know what was wrong and offered to replace the entire H.U. He didn't even suggest that they try to clean the laser pick up.
At the same time the dealer is re-finishing all 4 alloy wheels due to corrosion bubbles on the painted surfaces of the wheel.
The well know Teflon tape treatment will also be applied to quiet the sunroof.
I hope this all works out and I will keep you folks updated. Thanks for the advice.

Acura CD changer (trunk)
Hey everyone, new guy here....this site is great!!!
I have a 99Tl and I am running into the same problem in that the stock Head Unit does not play CD-R's very well. My friends and I tried all types of CD brands. This is a huge inconvenince to me, considering the fact that 99% of my CD collect are CD-R's...I am going to buy the Acura stock 6 Disc Changer (trunk mount) Does anyone have this, and if so, does it play CD-R's well or is it the same as the Stock HU?
thanks guys

I picked up my 2000 TL from Acura of North Toronto last week and all is well. Having replaced the entire head unit of my stereo, it now plays all my CDs perfectly.
The sunroof is quiet; I recommend the Teflon tape TSB to all.
The re-finished wheels look new. Here's to many years of happy Acura ownership. Thanks for all of your help and advice.

Just last month I purchased a '00 TL with 58k.
I used the stock CD player (no changer) with original (store bought) CD's with no problem for the first couple of weeks. I then had a CD-R that was burned for me that I tried with no luck. It wouldn't read any of the tracks after giving it 10-20 seconds time period per track.
After getting on this forum I found that this is a common problem with CD-Rs - fine.
Now just yesturday I had great problems reading brand new CD's that I had just recently purchased. After putting in the CD, the player would wait a couple of seconds, then eject the CD. I tried this several times, and after some time (and some accentuated verbal abuse) the CD began to play. But I still have to d*$k with it to get it to play CDs.
I plan on trying the lens cleaner as well and will let you know how it works. If you find the lens cleaner works for you, please pass it on.

HEY YOU GUYS! HES RIGHT...
Burning at slower speed means better quality and the layers are easily put on instead of fast cd-r speeds which can leave the CD Useless sometimes..
Just try 4x or 2x I gurantee you will notice a difference..
Also you do know it depends on the programs you use?
Nero I Believe will work best..
Easy CD Creator is just $#|T - Trust me that thing has lots of problems..
Also if You can buy the Sony CD-R's They are the Best..
MY FINAL WORD: TRY NERO AT 2x or 4x Burning Speeds.. And Use Sony CD-R To Burn - I Have found Memorex is good too.
tdk works the best for me, a slower burn speed also helps, but i dont think some of the earler head units are good at reading cd-r's ive tried just about every kind and every one has worked and not worked on occasion
Hello all.. I'm also a new owner of a 99' TL.. I was bummed to find out about this CD-R problem too, but couldn't just sit there and let it control me. So i basically went out and picked up all kinds of different CD-Rs to try them out..
Bottom line, burning at no more than 4X using Memorex Audio CDR's worked for me.

I use Fuji CD-Rs, burned with NERO 6.6.0.8
Using this combo CD player playes copied dosk like original without any delay, but if I try to use TDK or SONY, it takes forever to start playing them.
