I am now convinced that this lovely recall causes a transmission problem....... I brought my car in for my recall at 92k miles (already had my tranny replaced before this.) I had not one sign of a transmission problem. The recall was done (oil jet installed) and 2 weeks later my tranny failed without warning. Coincidence? Maybe. My father, with a 2003 TL-P with 28k miles just got his recall notice. He never had any sign of a tranny failure. He got the oil jet installed and 1 1/2 weeks later, his tranny failed. This is absolute Bullsh!t. If anyone thinks this oiljet is actually doing any good, you are in denial. This is one big Band-Aid for the real problem. The truth is that they have no idea how to fix it.

Acura is now SH!T in my book. I'd rather drive my 1982 Pontiac T1000 and worry about the stupid rattles than to drive a car that I have to worry about tranny problems all the time. This car is a piece of crap. It is sad..... I LOVED my car, even after the 1st tranny problem. After the second, I dealt with it. Now my father's died (after I suggested the piece of crap to him) and now I will never own another acura again. They say the failure rate is only 1 or 2 percent. I bet that is Bullsh!t too. There is not one person I know (personally) with a TL or TL-S that has not had a tranny failure.

Good luck to all of you. Whether or not I am stuck with this piece of SH!T, I no longer have any interest in it.

I hear you...

I have 33K miles on my 02TLS with NO sign of tranny problems. I have drained and refilled the tranny fluid every 5K miles along with my own personal oil changes. I did this just to feel safer with the POS. The fluid is always brown, but the amount of shavings that collect on the magnetic drain plug seem to be less each time around.

NOW... I'm in a dilemma... Do I take this otherwise problem free car in and have the "$hit Kit" installed... risking that the dealer does a sloppy job and causes leaks or other problems, etc. OR EVEN WORSE... have the tranny crap out in a few weeks?

This sucks! Does anyone know of a Dealer in ORANGE COUNTY, CA that at least does GOOD AND THOROUGH WORK???

How long do we have to take the car in and have the recall work done? I'm inclined to wait until I actually have problems, or until I get closer to the 100K extended tranny warranty. Do we VOID the (free) 100k extended tranny warranty if we fail to act on the recall notice???

Thanks and good luck to all! But yeah, me too, I will never own another Honda car after this experience. I typically drive my cars into the ground. I don't trade them in every few years. So this constant paranoia really sucks!

I feel ya BJSTLS, same thing with me. I replace my tranny fluid every 15K miles just to make myself feel better. 71,000 miles no noticable problems. Get the recal fix and 1.5 weeks later it failed and they had to replace it. li

After reading your post and some others, it seems like this recall is bogus. I just got my notice in the mail today and now I have second thoughts if I want to get this jet kit or not............

I am not trying to deter anyone from getting the recall done but even though this recall is in no way related to the "original" transmission problem that triggered a warranty extension, I do feel that it was not well thought out. It just seems very strange to me that so many failures come soon after the oil jet install. Keep in mind, if and when you have to have your transmission replaced, the new trannies have the oil jet "built into" the transmission instead of bolted on. I have not had any problems since my recent transmission replacement but I have only had it for 5k miles. If there was a problem I would be driving the car through the front glass of the acura dealership.

After the last timing belt recall, I felt like doing that too. The tech. guy at Acura said these exact words to me after I asked for a loaner......"Sorry, but you have to get here at 8 in the morning when we open to get a loaner and we usually have 3 cars, but if you want a rental, Enterprise is right over there, but we're not paying for it." Unbelieveable.....

So i guess i shouldn't take mine in for the recall then? I've got over 60K on my 2000TL, never had any tranny problems. Should i leave well enough alone?
Love the site by the way. Nice job.

Tranny feels bad even with Oil jet

Hey all,
I have an 01 TL with 58K and had the tranny recalled 2 months ago for the oil jet which I did. The car sstill feels as though it bucks at times between 1st and 2nd gear. I have brought the car to the dealership in Lakeland, FL and they keep telling me they find nothing wrong. Is this normal of the car? I just had the oil changed today at Shell and he told me my tranny fluid is black. I had the tranny flushed by Acura last month. Any tips? Thanks

Will Acura compensate me for the lease payment on a proportionate share for the time I'm left driving this shitty rental vehicle?

My letter says cars with <15K will just get the kit added with no inspection. Cars >15K will be checked for signs of heat damage and if no damage get the kit. If damage, new tranny.

My TLS has 13,500. Should I wait 'till 15K to take it in?

Hello All,
I have 2002 TLS and had my Tranny recall done couple months ago. After getting this done I've noticed that my car runs much more ruffer (for lack of better term) and I've notice my gasoline milage has gone down from 400+ miles per tank to about 375 miles per tank.

I did not have any issues with the tranny before the recall work and now I'm wondering if it's actually worse than Anyone else notice this.

If you do a lot of city driving then you'll get less milage per gallon. I haven't changed my driving habbits and I used to get 400+ per tank on regular basis but I noticed after the transmission service it's gone down to ~375. Car also feels like it's working much harder in the lower gear to get upto speed. Any one notice this?

My 2003 3.2 TL-S in at the dealership right now having the transmission replaced after I brought the car in because of the recall. The dealer (Champions in Houston) gave me a loaner for the day on Friday and asked me to bring their car back when it was determined I needed tranny replaced and gave me a rental, all at no cost to me. The 2004 Nissan Altima is O.K. but I want my baby back and hopes it runs as smoothly as it did before. I only have 42K miles on it!!!

Yeah, they are gonna tell you that they don't see a problem with your second gear and that there is no need for a tranny replacement. Then they'll bolt on the oiljet and send you home.

After that..... good luck.

10k miles would have been nice. Mine lasted just under 1200 miles after the oiljet install. My father's TL lasted less than 800 miles after the oiljet install.

I got the oil-kit installed by the dealer about 6 months ago. No problem so far except this whinning noise at low speed (hard to hear though, you have to drive slow in a neighborhood with houses on both side so the sound reflects back to you...and open your windows).
Also, everything I crank the car up, there is a lound "CLANK" immediately after the car starts up. I do not have these sounds before the cooler...but oh well, it's still going.

Anyone else experiences these??

I'm on tranny number 3, and this one has the oil-kit installed. No whining noise, but I'm still randomly getting the hesitation / slipping / lockup thing going on.

I also get the loud "CLANK" at startup occassionally, but I cant' seem to figure out what it is or duplicate it consistently. I talked to a guy at the dealership who was bringing in his TL-S for the recall - he never had the tranny fail, but did have the CLANK. He said the noise had something to do with the A/C system.

Can anyone shed some light on the "CLANK" at startup?

It's been a year since anyone posted on this thread. I'm interested in getting a used near luxury car but am hesitant due to the problem with the 2nd generation TL transmission. Does anyone know how many transmissions have received either a replacement or the oil jet? I wonder what percent of cars have had problems. If it's like the 1.6% that I read (from Honda) then I may take a chance on a TL but if it's like 10% or more, I think I'll try some other car. Can anyone provide info? Thanks.

I started on tranny #3 at 88k miles. That 1.6% number is grossly underestimated. Because faiure is due to a design defect rather than a manufacturing defect I'd stay away from the TL. Every 2nd gen tranny has the defect (at least from 2000+ with the 5 speed auto, as 1999 model has 4 speed).

I have a 2002 3.2TL - S with 58,600 miles, and so far the car runs smooth (knock on wood, lol) but then again, I dont know the symptoms of transmission failure.

So should I just play it safe and go to an acura dealer and tell them about the recall, and ask them to have my transmission replaced?

I did not buy the car from them, I bought it from a friend, So I am not under the dealers warranty, so can I still get a new transmission?

no new transmission............all they do is install oil jet kit for 2nd gear tranny failure, pretty much just gotta be lucky and hope your tranny holds up(since most failures are related to 3rd gear clutch pack).Otherwise check the owner link and type in your vin to see if maybe the oil jet has already been installed on your car.
good luck
