03 acura tl type s
03 acura tl type s
someone is selling a 03 tls with about 100000 miles with a salvaged title for 3000. its been fixed but seems like it needs a tune up, alignment, rotors, left headlight and thats it really. is that a good deal?
it needs more than a tune up at 100- you are looking at a minimum of 1500 to 2000 for the work it needs right away, the timing belt service/water pump, full brake job, etc etc,,,plus you run a huge risk of trans failure and no warranty due to salvage
If you are a good mechanic DIY guy/girl..thats cheap price, assuming you have another transmission to drop in it when that one goes
look at the trans underneath- blue bolt heads on the main bolts mean its an acura rebuilt unit- thats better than an original
You can call acura and ask when/if it was replaced -1 800 382 2238x5

The 100K mile service would be needed whether salvage or not, so that shouldn't dissuade you. The 7-year window is probably closed on the transmission anyway, so again, might not matter. But you can use the VIN to see if it was part of the recall just for your own knowledge. Some 03's were and some weren't. See if it has the oil jet kit installed, too. Take it for a spirited drive if you can. 01tl4tl posted a driving/shifting test that might help you determine if there is an existing transmission problem.
Do you know where the car was hit? Any pics of damage? You mentioned alignment and rotors. Does it pull when you drive and/or brake? Are the tires wearing evenly? It might be more than an alignment problem if the frame was bent. Replacement headlights can be expensive. Does it need a new HID ballast, too? Those are steep.
Any lights on in the dash? Particularly, the SRS light? That would indicate more repairs needed. Did the airbags deploy? Of course test the a/c as well. Front-end collisions will almost always require some a/c repair.
To be legal for driving, the title needs to be 'rebuilt' instead of 'salvage'. Who's gonna pay the state for that post-repair inspection to get rebuilt status?
As mentioned above, that is a cheap price. That is an auction price where a dealer would buy, fix, and resell for probably $6,000 or more. Being a type-S, closer to $7,000.

If you are buying it, even if the tranny shifts good, i recommend that you do drain and fill plus external filter, and take your 3rd clutch pressure switch out and clean it really good. It will help big time in the future.

Why is it salvage, or was it rebuilt earlier?

I wonder how the steering wheel got crooked. They don't come from the factory like that, so must have been as a result of the accident.

Easy, chief. Just trying to help with advice and pics of oil jet, so let's not cop an attitude. So the wreck was from earlier and just recently fixed, or was it awhile ago? Maybe it varies by state, but salvage and rebuilt are different titles. Salvage is wrecked, but not approved for driving. Whereas rebuilt is fixed and approved by the state for highway use.
check the frame & for signs of what type of collision it was. Look at the cracks between the door & the body.. alot of body shops have trouble shimmying the panels back in place so when u look at the door if the crack between the 2 isnt even.. the part was likely replaced. if u dont buy this car.. pass it on to me. i need a commuter car & that price aint bad at all.
