Post '02 Taillights

I just spoke to my local dealer. He says the taillight sockets are different on on the '02 Type-S from the '01. For the guys that have already made this install, did the socket plug fit right into the harness or did you have to cut the plug off & splice it in? Thanks for any feedback.

You have to buy the new harness. It's like $11-$12 and it fits great. The harness totally replaces the existing harness for all the bulbs, brake, backup...

You need two.

So the harness plugs right into the existing harness? When you say I need two, you mean the harnesses, right? Thanks.

Funny thing is that I have the inspire tail lights from Japan and only the left side is different (where the socket is larger than the plug). Those with inspire lights experience this also? I just thought it was kinda odd.

Sorry for the confusion. The current harness in the 99/00/01 TL does not work in the 02 tails, the blinker socket is too big in the 02. You knew that.

When you buy the 02 tails they don't come with harnesses, unless you order them. If you try to use the old harness from your 99/00/01 TL, the blinker socket won't work.

You have to buy two new harnesses for the 02 tails. The old harnesses you can toss, they are not used in the 02 tail light.

Sorry bout that.

Don't forget also that the old tails used a clear bulb for the signals and the new ones will require an amber one. Luckily, you can put a 1156A bulb in the new harness.

Dont listen to any of these guys !!! Donot go out and buy the harness or new bulbs... My old harness worked fine and I remember cuz I installed today... The problem is yes, with the blinker... All you have to do is twist the socket until it catches the lip and stick two pieces of electrical tape around it... There, much better than going through the hassle of waiting on a harness... The blinker bulb looks great too !!! It's a nice white light... Very easy to install by the way, I finished in 30 minutes, counting a few smoke breaks in too!!! Good Luck...

Yes you dont have to but if you want a cleaner and more professional install the new harness will be better.
