Need rubber expert!!!

I'm in the market for new set of rims and tires to de-pax my 06 RL. Looking around 19" set of rims and i've been advised to look at 245/40/19 tires. So here is my question... Price varies SO MUCH pending manufacturer. I've ready multiple treads about bridgestone and Michellin but real question is how much difference would I notice by going with lower tier brand? (hankook/kumho/continental...etc) that are drastically cheaper.

Also do they not make bridgestone serenity on this particular size? tire rack didn't have one.

A/S+ is an excellent (not very cheap) all season choice except they're not available in the size he specified.

I'm looking for best all season. Mostly concern about tire noise/vibration.

I know Pilot A/S is great... or at least they better be considering the price.
But i'm curious what difference would I really notice if I go with the lower tier models. Are michellin/bridgestone really worth $300/tire?

I am basing my tire recommendations on the ratings I have seen on CarAndDriver.com for the top tire and ratings I have seen on TireRack for every other tire.

There is no reason you should be paying $300/tire for anything.

Thanks but there has to be reason why they sell those tires for $300/tire. Suckers like me actually consider buying them. Whether that's the premium mark up for the brand name... i don't know. I guess I shall see.

So looks like i'll be pulling a trigger on a set of Ronjon Legend 19" rims to de-pax it.
What else do I need beside new tire?

TPMS? (Does it have to be OEM? will I have any issues with resetting the system once moutned?)

Lug nuts? (Does it have to be OEM?)

Anything else I miss?

19's look great and all, but have you considered 18's? If you do, the 245/45-18 size will be the equivalent of what you had with PAX, but your choices in rubber will be so much greater than 245/40-19, and less expensive. In addition, the wheels, will in general, be lighter and less expensive.

TPMS is a must, you can go w/ aftermarket if you know which would work, I went with oem I found at a discount.

Lug nuts RJ will advise you on, they are different from those used on OEM rims.

As for $300 tires, there is a small differecnce between overpriced Michelin PS2 and Continental DW summer tires, but you will notice the price difference is huge.

There must be a reason for that but I doubt your butt meter will notice it much.

Yes, I considered it but I was able to find a very good deal (at least in my opinion for his 19" Legend Set). Plus knowing these were specifically made for RLs and fitment would be perfect, that makes me feel better. I'm not upgrading wheels for aesthetic, it's strictly to de-pax only.

I noticed you have a set of ronjon wheels as well. Did you consider removing TPMS off old set and mount on new? I heard that's doable.

What difference would I notice going from OEM stock wheels to larger aftermarket? MPG? Road noise?

when I got the RJs I kept the OEM so I just purchased a 2nd set of TPMS. The main difference going up is the wheel weight, in your case the difference might not be very large as PAX tire/wheel combo is super heavy.

MPG will drop or rise based on the tire compound (touring tires are best for MPG and worst for handling).

Road noise is also based on the tire, read up on reviews on TireRack.

What you forgot about is the ride quality and I bet it's gonna get a bit bumpier as the sidewall will be much smaller than before.

Also, avoid large potholes or you will be changing tires much more frequently than oil.

I currently have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on my RJ's in stock 245/45/18 and will be moving to Continental DW for the summer.

Reading other thread (comparing bridgstone vs. Continental)... i'm a bit hesistant to try continental. I'm also in Georgia so DWS model isn't worth it for me. I do like the pirelli one you picked up. very good pricing and aren't they usually consider top tier brand?

well, I got Conti DWS on my car right now and I have nothing but praise for it in the dry, wet, or snow.

Pirelli is a very well regarded brand, but do keep in mind all brands have good and bad tires.

As you can see from my earlier post, I will be getting a Continental summer only tire which is actually rated by TireRack tests higher than Michelin PS2 and it is much cheaper.

Will post results of that when I get there.

On the lug nuts, Ron is selling me a set for $25. Is this same as lock? I know my lexus came with this so thieves can't take them off. what is that called?

Are you saying your stock has 245/45/18? then how about your RJ set? are they 19"? if so what size are your tires? Are you running 245/40/19 or 255/40/19 (as suggested on Tirerack)?

I'm saying that I'm running stock size RJs with a very agressive offset.

stock wheels (245/45/18" offset in the high 40's)

RJ Rev GT-M custom drilled (245/45/18" offset 32)

actually a set of OEM wheel lock set is going for $70 on ebay. So I guess I'll need to buy a set of lug nuts from Ron, then go out and buy this lock set to protect my new rims.

OEM locks have a different seat vs the rims you'll be buying, I suggest you consult Ron first or get a set of Gorillas which are probably much cheaper than OEM.

It is doable, but a second set will cost you less than the cost to remove your PAX tires from the rims, deinstall and reinstall TPMS, plus you would (or should) have to do a TPMS service on your original set. In addition, you have the comfort of knowing that your non replaceable TPMS batteries are "new"

Going from 18" approximate, PAX wheels to standard wheels, you should notice a huge difference in the way the car handles. You will probably lose something on the order of 80+ lbs of unsprung weight. That is enough for you to feel more responsive steering, and a whole new lightness of being. The car will seem to move off the mark more quickly, and feel less heavy. You should notice a decrease in comfort...the PAX tires were very good in that regard. Depending on the rubber you get, you will probably also notice a decrease in mpg's, especially if you get performance rubber. The size of tire may also affect all of the above. What size tires are you getting?

245/40/19 is what has been recommeded to me (by RonJon) so that's what i'm going with. I looked around for 255 but MAN... they are expensive. little interested on this.... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

Considering where I live, not too concerned about snow or ice. I'm just looking for comfort/low noise type of tires.

Any market out there for a set of used PAX rims? I was planning to keep the tires on and try to sell as a package.

245/40/19 is the correct size. 255's are expensive, that is what I am running because at the time, there were no 245's except in UHP summer. At least now, there are some all season choices, not many, but some.

So new set of RonJons 19" legend is on its way... now I need to figure out a set of tires to go with it. After going thru various reviews on tirerack.com, I've narrowed it down the followings... All are 245/40/19

Pirell Pzero Nero All Season - $179/tire
Continental DWS - $230/tire
Michelin Pilot A/S Plus - $290/tire

So question is... how much difference would I notice out of these tires??

get the Pirellis and don't even look back.

DWS are better for snow, by a lot.

Pilot's are better for dry, by a little.

Also what's the best place to buy a set of TPMS that would work with 06 RL?
OEM at the dealer is going for $59/piece. I'm assuming I can find it less expensive. No?

i'm going to look like an idiot asking this....but when you look up 245/40/19 on pirelli, this pzero nero model is the only set that's less than $200/tire. Everything else is $300 and up. Why is that??

if you're looking for a summer tire, I think the below is your best choice for the money

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

as far as the price on Nero's

the reviews are good, don't sweat it

Man, you sure know your way around tirerack.com. That chart is DEF helpful. Wow....

I think i'm leaning on Nero. Local Acura dealer quoted me $60 to mount/balance all 4 tires. With that, I'll have these tires shipped to them, bring my new set of rims, lug nuts and TPMS... and I should be good to go!

I think you aren't reading my posts, read this one and buy the Hankook

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...mparison_tests

it's #8 on the TireRack chart of uber summer tires. I'll be buying #1 this summer but it's still under $200/per

Alright, set of rims arrived today. Looks awesome.
will be placing an order for new rubber tonight. (I think i'm set of Pirelli Pzero).
Ron also recommend two ebay links for new lug nuts and wheel lock set.
Now i'm in search for a new set of TPMS. Question is... can I go aftermarket or will OEM fit? What's the best place to buy these?

What else do I need? I'll be taking these to a local dealer for install. let me know please!

Yes, those are the links I saw on ebay. Seems price would be about same. OEM vs. aftermarket. I have a message out to Ron whether aftermarket will fit these legends wheel w/o problems.

Considering price is same and if they both work well, I'm thinking OEM just to be on the safe side.
