iPhone links perfectly with RL

Was a little worried, but I just linked my iPhone with my
2005 RL with absolutely no problems.

Battery level and signal strength meters show in the vehicle display.

Good to hear. Does Iphone also link with Datalink? I expect it is AT&T. I am waiting few months to see the success of iPhone before getng onboard. Likely when the prices drop and plan rates moderate.

Question

When you paired the phone. Did the RL tell you it was compatible and offer to set up a Datalink? I did not see iPhone on the HFL mini-site yet so I don't know if it is expected to work with Acuralink for data transmission.

First, I have no idea how datalink works or what it does so I may just
learn something here.

I simply pressed the CALL button and did a PHONE SETUP -> PAIR command
and paired the iPhone with my RL's bluetooth system. After that was complete
the RL voice system never asked if I wanted to set up anything else.

Datalink is the means that AcuraLink can send messages to your RL's Navi (recall notices, service bulletins, etc) as well as the RL uploading diagnostics to AcuraLink should it throw a troublecode. It offers reminders of service appointments made through OwnerLink as well. It is rarely used, but cool feature when used.

Good info, NJRonbo!

It's too bad I'm unwilling to change from VZW just to buy an iPhone. "It's the network". (and this from a 21-year Mac user and [happy] Apple stock holder).

My understanding is that the iPhone cannot be used as a modem (i.e. no phone-data connection) so that would necessarily preclude its use with Acuralink.

Other than that, how do you like it? I have over a year left with t-mobile, so I won't be switching any time soon, but I am full of iPhone lust nonetheless.....

Anyone have an update on this issue? I just bought an iPhone. Very cool. But I can't setup the AcuraLink with it. That's too bad if it won't work

iPhone does not have a data modem. It will not work with AcuraLink. Did you check the HFL site beforehand?

No I didn't check, but thanks anyway for the answer. It wouldn't have stopped me from making the purchase but, none the less, I'm disappointed. This iPhone does everything else in the world. It's amazing.

So, now it is a few months later. The iPhone 2.0 software is out, along with applications which allow owners to "tether" their iPhone to a laptop (i.e., allowing the iPhone to share its EDGE or 3G connection and act as a data modem). Seems like we should be able to take advantage of this and use it with AcuraLink. Any ideas on how?

P.s. On a side-note, I read that AcuraLink uses the XM system. Is that true? Do iPhone owners have, at least, some functionality (as long as they have an XM subscription)?

I just bought an iPhone 3G, so I'll test the functionality with Acuralink when I get a chance. Turns out AT&T's 3G network works great where I am most of the time at work or at home....just giving the phone a try.

BTW, the iPhone 3G links perfectly with the RL's HFL.

I don't think there will be a difference between out-of-the-box iPhone 3Gs and original iPhones. With either model, I think we will need to install one of the applications out there which allow its data service (be it EDGE or 3G) to be shared.

I just wish there was a way to get it to stop asking to set up the phone every damn time I get in the car with my iPhone 3G. It won't work with Acuralink, so how do I get it to give up asking?

After browsing around a bit, the apps I've seen which allow the data service to be shared use WiFi to create a network -- and they also require your iPhone to be jailbroken, which means hacked.

The iPhone apparently lacks the profile for data sharing (DUN) through the Bluetooth connection in its ROM, which would seem to preclude the use of it with AcuraLink.

Honestly, this is the 5th phone and third mobile carrier (Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T) I've had since I got my RL.... and only once have I been able to get AcuraLink to work, and when I did, the phone didn't work very well (kept disconnecting from the handsfreelink..... often just after placing a call, highly annoying). It's essentially a useless feature, anyway, as all it does is allow remote diagnostics... the email messages and such (which my dealer doesn't support anyway) come over the XM sattelite.

Also, speaking of useless -- plugging the iPhone 3G into the Acura MusicLink comes up with a "This accessory does not work with your iPhone" message on the iPhone... damn thing won't even charge it.

I really want my $300 back from Acura for the completely and utterly craptastic MusicLink that I've never, ever, been able to get to work in 3 years.

I disagree. New applications - like Netshare - allow the iPhone to share its data connection via Bluetooth. I think, with the right settings, it would work... We just need the settings.

Netshare lasted about a day:

Furthermore, Netshare absolutely used the phone's WiFi to tether....

I have an iPhone 3G and so does my wife. Both my RL and her vehicle have BT and while it is easy to set up in both vehicles, it is horribly hard for the people on the other end to hear us when talking. Anyone else having this problem??

my iphone 3g links to the car, it has no problem of dialing, but i can't figure out how to answer incoming calls. Do I have to say some commands when answering a call? Or press any buttons?

Look in your manual for clearer instructions.

Basically, you have to hit the top HFL button to answer, bottom HFL to hang up.
HFL is a different system than the voice recognition system that uses the small round button to activate voice control for navi/HVAC/audio.

All,

I wonder if anyone has the same combination as i am, iPhone 1G on 2.0.1 firmware (jail broken) with 06 RL? I got all phone functions to work (signal strength, battery, dialing, answering, etc) except the caller ID when receiving a call.

I know RL does caller ID without a problem as it did when i use my SonyEricsson. But i can't seem to get that info anymore since i switch to iPhone.

Any insight is appreciated.

new 3G iPhone 2.1, HELP!

Guys, needs your help! I just got new iPhone 3G with 2.1 update (two days) and having problem with receiving calls. I have no problem making calls and call waiting but when receiving call the system will ring and radio will mute but the moment I press to connect, the radio will unmute and calling party will hear me and the radio but I can not hear them unless I "TRANSFER" the call to iPhone. This is happens with 99% incoming calls! I checked the ACURAZINE and most simular complaines with 3G and HFL coming from TL not RL. Called HFL help line and they think this the iPhone problem, especially 2.1 version (they have no test data for it). Help!!!! Any one of you have the same issues with the iPhone? Or may be you did and got it resolved.

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but YES, I am having the same issues with my 3G iPhone - making calls works just fine, the signal strength and battery life show up in the display HOWEVER, when I have an incoming call and press the HFL button to answer, HFL will mute the radio but the call will not pick up. The call will then be bounced from the HFL back to the iPhone and the radio will be unmuted so before you know it, the incoming call is blasted with your music and you've got to talk to them on the iPhone - It really is so discouraging that I am considering disabling the bluetooth.

I have found that to answer an incoming call on the HFL, you've got to press the HFL answer button twice, then select from the iphone the source to be HFL...it's quite a hassle.

Has anyone found a solution for this??

Thanks!

I was the exact same problem too. What solved it for me was when an incoming call comes, I hold down the answer button on the steering wheel for a couple of seconds. It works perfectly. When I would just tap the button it wouldn't work. My other verizon cell would answer right away with a quick tap, though. So it must be unique to the iphone that it requires a longer button press.

Let us know if this works for you.

I wonder given that my Iphone is hacked (can't stand AT&T) if the Datalink will work as unlocked Iphones have been ableto tether for some time now. Have to give it a try.
BTW, comparing my friends AT&T legit Iphone 3G and my Tmobile Iphone 3G on my RL, the sound on mine is far far superior to his. Turning off his 3G improves his audio considerably.
I have also found that the link is so so, not as robust as my Sprint PDA phone (POS otherwise). Sometimes it will pick up, other times-nope.

I believe that the tethering apps (official and jailbroken) only work with Wifi, not bluetooth-I have not seen a tethering app that connects a Mac or PC with the iPhone via bluetooth for the purposes of using the iPhone as a modem (ie, Bluetooth DUN).

There are two iPhone apps, only for jailbroken iPhones, which may lead to functionality with AcuraLink (i.e., Bluetooth DUN): Sweettooth and iBluetooth. Both are relatively new, but both also add additional Bluetooth profiles to the iPhone. Most importantly, both have announced that Bluetooth DUN (short for Dial-Up Networking) will be added very shortly. Both apps are available for download via Cydia. You can read more about iBluetooth here: http://www.ibluetoothproject.com.

Thanks for the tip-I'll grab them both from Cydia and do some experimenting.

Thanks lar1100...

Holding down the answer button a little longer does work, but not all the time - it seesm as if I hold down it not quite long enough or just a little too long, it'll do the same old pick up on the HFL and immediately switch back to iphone. I'll keep working on it and see if I can get the timing down perfectly.

Just to update...with the newest iPhone software update, all the bluetooth issues are fixed - there is no problem with the HFL switching back to iPhone after answering etc...

So just in case anyone was having the problems that lar1100 and I were having - just update your software and you'll be good to go!

RL 05 plus iphone 4

I have an acura 05, and I just got the new iphone 4. My old phone was a blackberry and now when I try to add new phone or sync phone it wont work!

Has anyone had this problem?

From the options menu I hold the key down and say

Sync Phone - no phone has been found

I try to add phone" - no phone has been found

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
