iPad as a monitor

How sweet it would be to have the new iPad as a "touch" style gps screen in the RL? Its got Google Maps. It would have to be the 3G version, but the screen would be bigger and navigating with the touch screen would be HOT. Its an AMAZINGLY thin screen too. - Plus you'd have the internet!!!!!(along with a TON of other stuff).

Its only $500 too.

Wont be long before someone retrofits their car (any) with this thing.

The next generation of Microsft Sync will be bringing email and Internet connectivity to Ford. Already MB, BMW and Audi have interfaces for limited connectivity.

It will be interesting to see what Honda / Acura releases next as they are very tight lipped with these strategies. I expect further advancement in VR technology from Acura as it enable more usability while driving and remains hands free. Tapping touch screens, for the driver is not as safe on the drive. However, I would expect to see iPad like interfaces for passenger and rear passengers. I could imagine, in place of rear seat DVD units, a removable iPad like interface devices and the car being a mobile hotspot. Oh what joy the kids would have surfing the net, playing games or listening to online music over the dreary DVD babysitter of today, or god forbid, live human interaction with other humans (aka family) in the car.

I would not mind having my RL 'read' my messages similar to the text-to-speech capability we have not, with a more fluid, less robotic voice. Or being able to dictate a message and with VR send messages HF (and view free of a monitor). But this could be expensive, a theft liability and upgrade life cycle dependent, which cars typically do not yield to technology life cycles or upgrade capability.

Can you imagine email, GPS, Google maps - with addresses interfaced- along with street vew, the Internet, Music, games, movies, pics, and a frickin TOUCHSCREEN !!!!!?

All integrated with your mobile phones contacts , favorites etc?? The possibilities are endless.

Apple also has a "mobile Me" application that integrates your iPhone, ipad, your laptops, and your home computers, all together. You enter one number into any of your devices, it updtes all.

This is badass! I'd DIE to have this installed in my car. ( well, practally).

I've always thought Apple should make a car interface. Since most people use their products through their stereo anyways. Come on Jobs where ya at?!

Some of the features here are interesting but checking E Mail while driving? The lawyers are going to love this! I hate touch screens, I have used them in the TL and in Honda and typing with a virtual qwerty KB is an exercise in backspace/delete because every bump determines which character you will enter (assuming that the POS accepts your entry).
Fairly soon driving will be about 30% of your attention and will probably serve as population control and freeway density reduction. How about we get back to DRIVING?

Internet connectivity is already available or will be soon from Cadillac. For $500 the dealer installs a wireless card in your car. You can surf wirelessly using your iPad, laptop, or whatever from the car for a monthly fee.

I haven't done it yet as I have an iPhone and don't really want to pay yet another bill to run my car (I pay for OnStar and *blech* XM already).

Acura used to have touchscreens in all their cars but are moving away from that for safety reasons (I suppose) and only using the big knob. The knob was first used in our RL, then moved to the MDX, and now the TL and (I believe) the TSX.

Wonder how the iPad will hold up to the high heat of a car install.

Impressive install in that Tundra/Sequoia. But agree, how much time away from the road do we need to add into our daily drive?
Email in cars will one day be common place, a proper working voice recognition system is key.

I personally would only want it for the GPS capabilities (1st) and the iPod controls/interface (Secondly). Seeing the album cover while playing a song would be cool. That and touch screen music selection would be neat.

To see how much heat it could handle would DEFINATLY be a test. That and seeing how long it would take to have someone break into your car to steal it.

The new Audi A8 has a navigation with Google earth and a sim card slot for 3g internet capablility and it also has a touch pad that's suppose to work like the apple touch. I am soooo jealous. I had this idea for Acura's for like 3 years. I actually wish Acura, At&t, and Apple would get together and make some kind of Navigation for our car in the next model change for the RL. Maybe work with google to get our navigation to work better as far as finding locations and stuff like that. But i believe that would definitely set our navigation ahead of the competition..... Just a thought.

I have a Motorola Droid that runs GoogleMaps,... I thought about how cool it would be to simply have its output linked thru the NAV console screen in my RL. Streetview and the Nav work flawlessly,... I could only imagine having the whole screen touch. I love where this thread is going!

Touch screens and driving don't mix. Maybe that is why Acura have moved to the joyknob. As a test, try reaching forward to the screen to input commands then compare that to the joyknob. The touchscreen encompasses too much brain power while driving while the joyknob is an intermittent use device.
The problem with Google maps (or any other) is that they have to be down-loaded. Our RL accesses the DVD, The 2010 MDX uses the HDD, which is faster but the next version will be a SSD and the speed will be impressive.

I'm sure future gen RLs will employ more voice command features into the Infotainment/Internet Systems. Joyknobs work, but technology leans towards more voice input.

My stereo is always on so when I use voice commands to do anything, the stereo mutes, she responds and then I can resume music. (I have to have her respond because I need to know what she got wrong). I do not think there is much that voice commands can do faster than the joyknob.
Frequently, technology asks for confirmation before a command is executed. Maybe our voice command systems should do it as well. It would save me having to undo what she got wrong. E.G. I ask for "Display Trip Computer" and she changes my audio from CD # 3 to AM radio 610! Now I have to undo the mistake and execute the command myself anyway. And, if you really want to be inefficient, try using a touch screen to do everything.
