Back up Camera on a 2005 RL

I posted eariler and someone told me that the rear camera won't work on my 2005 RL and they were correct. The camera does plug into the nav unit with no problem but the reason that it doesn't work is that there is no switch on the transmission to activate the camera when you put the car in reverse. Luckly I did not cut the car up basied on what someone told me on this group. So who ever gave me the advise THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!. Does anyone with a 2006 need a back up camera?

Do you think you can get the part you need for the switch in reverse by ordering it for an 06?
It may be the easiest way to make it work

If it's just the switch, can't you use the backup lights to activate it? There has to be a switch on the gearshift to activate the reverse lights on the car... I'd look for a way to use that to trigger. Worst comes to worst, just put in a toggle switch somewhere to ground or make hot that wire (whatever it needs) and you can then just flip on the backup camera manually...

However, I thought the reason it didn't work was that there was an issue with the navi system CPU, and that even though there was a plug for it, the internal wiring/programming of the head unit didn't allow it to work....

Wouldnt this work in conjuction with dom's tvnav2go system? I'm on the group buy for one of these units and plan to install the back-up cam into one of the inputs.

I am not sure as to the actual reason it wouldn't come on. A friend of mine was told by his dealer that it was the switch that was the issue. If it's the nav unit it self then we are really up the creek. I am going to start calling around to several Acura dealers and see what I can find out. If I find out anything of interest I will post it.

2006 Nav DVD Update

I was looking into updating the navigation dvd on my '05 RL to the current 2006 disc. When looking at the "what's new" section on the ordering website for the '05 RL it states that it adds compatibility for the back up camera. It's $185 plus shipping, but that may be the hold up with your back up camera working. The only warning is that the website says once you go to the '06 disc you can't go back, so you wouldn't be able to borrow one to test it. I'd like to know because if it works I'll probably want to get the camera.

Also, my experience with recently released technology is that most people don't have a clue. I called the dealerships to see about getting the ipod musiclink and they told me it wouldn't work on a 2005 model. I ordered the accessory online and installed it myself and it works perfectly. Basically if they don't know they tell you no.

So has anyone on the TL board ever installed a camera for the 2005 RL? I had a 2004 TL 6spd, and Dom's unit worked perfectly with the Wendy camera from eBay.

Can anyone confirm if Dom's unit works with the RL, or if he currently makes harnesses for the RL like he does for the TLs? I am on the market to getting an RL and I would love to have the rear camera. On the TL I used a secondary input for the camera and the rear backup lights to power the camera.

Basically, depending on if I can get the camera to work on the 2005 RL is what is holding me back from making a decision on what to buy 05 or 06 RL.

In general, I would get an 06 because there are a number of niggling TSBs out for the 05 which were mostly fixed with the 06. It just means less hassle dealing with all the TSBs. In addition, the 06 has a factory engineered camera kit available, which the 05 does not have, and There is also a greater chance you could actually come by an 06 that had the backup cam already installed. whereas with an 05, no chance for a factory engineered, dealer installed, camera.

Of course you could get an 07 because it has the rear camera installed standard.
