Why are USED RL Prices Going UP???

Since late last year, I have been tracking prices for RL and over the last 8-10 months I've noticed prices for 06 RL's trending upward. Back in Feb of this year I recall pricing for 06 RLs hovering steadily in the 20-25K range, with the majority of examples hanging between 21-23K. Now, I'm seeing 06's for as much as 33K for low mileage examples! In the last 3 months, I have seen very few 06's for less than 23K whereas only months ago, there were a glut of them on the market selling for 23K and under. What gives?? You'd think that with the release of the 2010 RL, prices would be trending downward instead of upward.

I've been checking dealers nationwide, vehix, autotrader, cars.com, and ebay and they all tell the same story. Any theories?

In this economy, people are foregoing the purchase of new cars and instead are buying used ones, particularly those coming off leases. Still, an 06 RL for $33k is way overpriced.

(edit) ^ Faster typer ....

When new car sales are down, used car sales go up. Simply a case of supply and demand.

Was just talking to a friend of mine who owns a used car lot, and his biggest challenge right now is sourcing used cars. Lower new sales, means less trade ins, and less available at auctions. He is having to pay up for vehicles just to fill the car carrier.

Our RL has also been recognized in a few auto and consumer publications as an outstanding used car value and high reliability. My insurance company also rates the RL very favorably to same market vehicles for premiums.

Of course the used car market is the primary driver of the values creeping back up.

The RL seems to get some recognition as a 'second chance' vehicle.

all the above is true. I just bought an RL. Before deciding on an RL, I was looking at/investigating the TL. The used car prices on the TL's today were HIGHER than NEW price sales in late 2008!!! That was on TL Type S models that I had priced late in 2008 vs now used. The base models were selling for about the SAME as 2008 retial or maybe $1-2k off.... Have you ever heard of a mass produced non collector item car - like a TL, selling for $30k in 2008, then showing up on a car lot in 2009, used, with 12-20k on the clock and they want $28500???

these cars are worth what people will pay - and obviously people are paying these higher prices, or else the dealers would be dropping them..

people want an Acura. they want a TL. a new 2009 TL costs $35000 ballpark. the buyer is in fear of losing their job, maybe has taken pay cuts, is underwater on their house, can't qualify for as much of a payment, etc - and so what do they do - they pass on the new car and look to used CPO cars. You can get a CPO, add the wrap, and if you buy 06-07 you can essentially have a bumper to bumpe rwarranty just as long as what you would get on the new car...

so if the number of peole making that decision has subtantially increased and dealers are seeing an increase in demand for used cars... prices go up.

prices are likely going up or at the very least, dealers are less willing to deal. they are selling less cars period - and there are less used cars coming off lease. more people are buying their cars off lease b/c they don't want to pay for another new one...

I noticed the same thing at local auto auctions I go to. '05-'06 RL's with 80K+ miles that went for around $13-$14K 6 months ago are now selling for $18-$19K. Sucks because I was hoping to buy one in late August. Still crossing my fingers

Glad I pulled the trigger on mine when I did as well. Certified 06 non-tech, immaculate inside and out, 40K miles for $24,000 (which wasn't great but the bought my off lease civic saving me $1000 in fines and $1300 in taxes)

Personal thought...prices are up 'cause gas prices are down. Americans flock to full sized vehicles and SUV's when they can afford to fill it up. If what I hear is coming down the pike (new fuel taxes), gas prices should be rising by atleast 50 cents a gallon once passed.

Gas price when I started my lease in 7/05: $2.17/gal
Peak of the fuel "crisis" in 8/08: $5.05/gal
Turn-in date (6/28/09): $2.55/gal

Nobama won't raise gas tax but states might.

Gas prices are up compared to earlier in the year I think, at least in Kalifornia.

It's in great shape too, from what I'm seeing around here, I got a good deal.

Got it at a BMW dealer. I went there looking for a 3 series, but due to the state of things, didn't find one. People hold on to their cars these days, I was only looking because I dropped the Transmission in my Lexus es300.

I had my dad help me, because he's great with buying cars, saw the Acura on the lot, with a sticker of 25,000. I walked away because of the sticker but he called me back to look at it. We test drove it, did the research that day, came back and closed the deal. It was pretty amazing really, it was like the sticker didn't exist at all for him. I've gotta learn how he did that...

I got the lakeshore silver (grey) and the grey interior. Not my ideal choice, I'm a sucker for black on tan or black on black, but for the deal and the ridiculous amount of car I came away with, I'm not complaining at all. I didn't even know any of the Acura line aside from the MDX before I got my RL. 2 months in and I'm loving it, especially this SH-AWD. I literally cackle with glee on some corners.

Discovered 2 new things about it today even! (sun positioning and LEDs on the door-damn-handles). A truly awesome car under a horribly marketed brand.

Earlier this year was definitely a sweet spot. I was looking at TLs and ending up getting an 05 w/38k miles (still under warranty) from an independent dealer for 19k. After replacing brakes, tires, and other misc. stuff, my total cost will still be less than 21k. At the time I thought I was getting a decent deal and didn't know I was buying in a price trough.

Oh, and I love the door handle LEDs too!

some great deals out there! I got an 06 with 29k, CPO at an Acura dealer for $26,500. slightly higher than some of the pricds i've seen you guys post..but the one I got is IMMACUlATE. it looks new inside. NO kids were in this car PERIOD!

part of the allure of the RL is that it depreciates pretty bad, and it is such a great car, yet very underappreciated...there are cars like that out there... GREAT cars, but just never caught on with the gneral public / "sheeple"....

everyoine wnats a 3 series or 5 series. my neighbor has a new 525. NO sport package, NO nav, it looks pretty, but I'm guessing they paid $45k+ as it's brand new.... but it's a bottom of the line BMW 5'er.

My RL, which cost roughly HALF what they paid dfor their car ahs double the features, WAY more power, nav, AWD..etc etc etc.

I'm currently in the market for an RL, and looking around in Jax. the prices are pretty much on par with how they should be. My current choices are:

2005 Black/Beige w/ 76,388m priced at $16,990
2006 Base Black/Beige w/ 42,831m priced at $20,000

05 is at a major dealership, 06 is at a small mom/pop place, and comparing mileage/age to price on the 06, is that reasonable or should I be concerned that something might be suspicious?

Definately a great deal on the 06, 4K less than I paid and mine had 40K miles. But it's certified for that piece of mind and it was in immaculate condition, no scratches, dings dents, oddly the inside still smells of new interior!

Just make sure you have a mechanic check it out because that is pretty low.

What is my 05 blk/blk with 48k on it worth? I am the second owner, and the car is perfect. I just bought a 4 yr/48k acuracare warranty for it also so that might add some value.

i just bought an 06 CPO RL. 29k miles. I paid $26,500. I negotiated down from an asking price that was about $29000.... most other cars in my area of the same year/mileage were asking around $26-27k. the one I bought was CPO and was honestly, immaculate. I could have probably found some cheaper, but after seeing so many, I wanted one that was spotless, clean, and was willing ot pay a bit more to get it..plus I wanted CPO.

if you can get a really clean 06 for 25k that is CPO i'd say you got a good deal.

the same dealer I was at had an immaculate 07, with the wood steering wheel, shifter, and the spoiler - 20k miles - they wwere asking $36 and I suspected I might be able to get it for $31-32k.... but I was shooting for $25k so it was more than I was willing to spend....

^^^ I have an 07 with those features (except it also is a CMBS trim type). Low mileage at 21000. I was offered $26k at a dealership this week as a trade in. i doubt you are going to get one retail for $25k. You are DEFINITELY not going to get a CPO at that price.
