Unhappy Where are all the RLs???

A friend of ours had her 08 RL totaled last week. Her daughter was merging on the highway and didn't know what it was but saw a large object hit the road to the left of her and disappear. It turns out that large object were two tires coming off of and from the broken axle of a 10 wheel dump truck at highway speed. They reappeared by slamming into the trunk of the RL and pushing it into the back seat. Fortunately her daughter is fine but does have some knee pain, but the RL is done. I've seen pictures (don't have them or I would post) and you can definitely see the two large verticle impressions the tires made in what used to be the trunk. Essentially the trunk was smashed and pushed forward into the rear seat. After being hit, she was able to mostly keep control of the car and wound up finally stopping with the right hand side of the car against the guardrail.

With all that being said, I'm trying to help them find a roughly equivalent replacement RL. It was a 2008 RL with Tech package and about 75K on the odometer. I guess I didn't realize the RL was such a low volume seller but pickens are slim to put it mildly. I've looked at a whole bunch of local dealer sites, Cars.com, Autobytel.com, Edmunds.com, KBB.com and there is next to nothing local and only one or two within 200 miles of metro Boston. Actually there are 36, but she would like to stay within the 2005-2008 body style with mileage and cost considerations. Anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions?

She is looking at MBs, (C and E class) BMWs, (5 series) Audis (A6) and Infiniti's (M) too but I am trying to steer her away from the German marques. I, personally, would never own a German marque out of warranty.

Thoughts? Ideas?

The 2G RL is definitely becoming a rare breed, especially the lower mileage ones. It's going to be tough finding a replacement equivalent in mileage in good condition. Most likely have to travel out of your comfort zone to find the right one.

I wouldn't own a German vehicle out of warranty as well. Maybe a newer Accord or Camry might fit the bill if the RL can't be found.

Thanks tito. My comfort zone and our friend's comfort zone are two different things, but she also has a little more on her plate as well. Her husband is home recovering from esophagael cancer surgery as well.

In terms of an Accord or Camry - as of now she is looking / hoping to not settle and find something equivalent to her RL. I did send her links to two candidates listed on Long Island, but that is an all day event traveling, looking, etc.....

I had to go to Montogomery, AL for mine.

Seems like most of the ones available when I was searching were in the NE though. Lots of them were in NJ.

What about Lexus GS350? UA7?

Don't think the UA7 will cut it, and I had forgotten about the GS350!! Will take a look -

Four of the last six used cars we have purchased (locally) have been from the NY / NJ area - I have no idea why. I know they have the big Manheim auto auction in Philly, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

In my search for an RL I ended up getting mine from neighboring Pennsylvania. As oo7 noted, I did see quite a few in southern New Jersey when I was looking but opted to not buy one there because Jersey road conditions are not too great and put a beating on a car. But as the OP said, pickings were very slim when I searched for mine.

I had my 05 w/105k for sale a little while ago, but put shocks and struts on it and decided to keep it. It's still for sale I guess, but with relatively new tires, TB done and it running and looking great, I won't let it go cheap. I also realized that even though this car is 10 years old, it holds its own extremely well against most newer cars in its range, and I don't have to plunk down anything. I think if I were to get anything else, it would be a Mazda 6 gt, really like that car...just doesn't have AWD

Here's a nice one near me that almost fits what you need. Don't know about price though:

Made 2 trips to Starkville, MS from Nashville to buy mine off Craigslist. One to check it out and make a deal and another to deliver payment and drive it home. I bought one of my Legends in Chicago, another in Raleigh, NC and my NSX in Mineral, VA. Sometimes you have to go a ways to get what you want. Patience helps, too---

Glad to hear the daughter was alright. always sad to see a RL get ruined. Ask the owners if they are willing to sell the headlights if they are in good condition. i could use a set to start a trade in program from Azine members

I thought CarMax would ship the car to their local "dealer" for free.

thomask, reasonable people won't kill you, but your comment about Acura is inaccurate. The rest of the competition has caught up, and Hyundai took value to a whole new level. Acura still has value, but it doesn't stand out like it used to.

It's a thought, but I'm pretty sure they have already signed the title over to the insurance company. The RL never made it home. It was flatbedded from the highway to a tow yard.

She is looking at the 05-08 MY. Do you have any idea why there are so many in the metro NY / NJ area??

I believe CarMax will move local cars locally, but outside a certain radius, I believe there is a fee and then higher fees outside a larger circles. Again - I believe, not positive but did find this -

CarMax Vehicle Search FAQ

Right now there are a whopping 12 RLs for sale at CarMax across the country. There is a decent looking one in TX and shows a transfer fee of $899 to MA. There is another one in AZ and shows a transfer fee of $999 to MA.

I'll do direct comparison with German competition in my free time (=not in a near future) but no real wood, FWD (really?) with PAWS, which is worse than SHAWD for 60k$ doesn't seem like a lot of value has left in acura imho.

I didn't believe the PAW-S breeched $60k. Meanwhile, a 4-banger 3 series will.

But all of that is against the point. The RLX is the least valuable of the brand. It's the exception, not the rule. Acura has significant value over the Germans. The Japanese are equally matched and Hyundai clobbers them all IMO.

Yeah, Hyundai is my new favourite too. As for germans, I don't think similarly specced BMW 535i will be much more expensive. 10-15k maybe? It's not a deal breaker. On a plus side you have options to choose what you like and it depreciates slower. Anyway, it's getting offtopic so I'll stop here.
BTW. I can't edit posts, someone knows why?

New members can't edit. I think it's a 15 day period. After that, you can edit a post within 15 min.

I disagree that a German will depreciate less, but you're right; we digress.

The OP said that her friend wants a model year between '05 and '08. I'm not sure what your reasons are for that. Me personally I'm not a fan of the RL from '09 and up and that's mainly because of the overall looks of them. The RLX is even more of a downer. It just looks so boring to me. I was considering a 2012 but the body style and look of the 05-08 really caught on to me. I did a quick search and sometimes if you are lucky you can find something good. Best luck on your search for a replacement.

This car is located at a dealer in Virginia which I know is well out of your way but I just want to emphasize that a nice one with low miles can be had. This one is $15,000.

For some reason the link to the ad is not working so here is pic I pasted here.

Thanks MrG The reason for the 05-08 MY is the body style she wants. Basically looking to get back to where she was..........

thankfully everyone is okay yeah definitely keep looking....but at this point it really does seem like she'll have to look outside of her comfort zone to find the closest one that meets her requirements or preferences. I hope she finds one, would be awesome if she can stay within the RL community and be happy ya know? But yeah definitely have her look into the newer accord or TSX/TLX or the Lexus gs350/isf they're not all AWD but deff amazing cars

I have a 2008 with 44K miles on it. I am willing to trade for a decent diesel truck or suv if they have one. I like the truck/suv to have some of the same features/luxury as the rl.

I am the second owner and I bought it from a toyota dealer in St louis, mo. I am also located in St louis.

Try a nationwide search (ie autotrader, carmax, etc.) and consider having it put on a hauler if the price and miles are right. You can have it locally inspected before purchase for peace of mind. I bought my first rl out of state and flew to drive it back because I was looking for a specific year and color, worked for me. I am on my 2nd rl which is an '05 that I saw on carmax.com and had it relocated to the local carmax dealer. just something to consider. Glad everyone is ok, don't settle for less then what you really want. I love my 05' rl. Good luck.

Has she actually driven an MMC? The RL has never posed well in pictures, and the MMC is no different. I feel that the MMC has more presence than the '05-'08. She may find that she actually likes the look, the change, and the subtle improvements (cooled seats, always on shift paddles, re-timed ECU, wood wheel, etc.). If she can find a 2011 or 2012, she gets a 6 speed transmission too.

I would personally stay away from 2006 and especially 2005. Otherwise, she is going to lose the tech that she is used to.

If you cant find the RL you are looking for then I would look at Lexus (gs350,is250) and Infiniti (m37, g35). Comparable in features and both have AWD options if that is something youre interested in.

Appreciate the suggestion, but our family friend would up buying an 09 BMW 535i X-Drive. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but it had the features, mileage, AWD and cost she wanted.

You can post here on AZ in the Black Market, just be sure to read the sticky at the top of the thread listings and follow all instructions contained within or the mods will ask for more info or simple close and ask you to start over.

On the bottom of each forum page is a list of moderators assigned to that forum. In addition, I have posted numerous times in this thread leaving a bolded "Moderator" tag under my username for all to see. PM'ing a moderator with forum questions is typically the best practice.

As for my "attitude", your post is completely off topic and borderline spam. Since your question was answered and I didn't think you were too far beyond the rules, I figured I would give you some helpful advice. I could've deleted your post, gave you a warning, and pointed you to the black market, but I thought that might have been too much "attitude". Good luck with your sale. This thread has run its course.
