Transmission fluid drain EMERGENCY

Hey guys,

I'm trying to do a tran fluid drain and refill on my 07 RL. Removed the drain plug but NOTHING is coming out. I thought maybe it was too low so tried pooring in some ATF...NOW the dipstick is showing its WAY above the correct fluid level. Any thoughts? I don't think i have the wrong plug...

That certainly looks like the wrong plug! The plug you show in your picture is way too high. What kind of wrench did you use to take out the plug? The ATF drain bolt is a round plug with a 3/8 in SQUARE opening for you to use a plain 3/8 in ratchet without any sockets to loosen it.

Try to look for it again. If you look specifically for 3/8" square-holed bolts, it should be easy to spot. I would NOT drive it with that tranny overfilled.

that appears to be the fill hole not the drain hole. there should be one on the bottom edge of the casing matching megatrons description.

Thanks guys. I ended up finding the correct plug. It was located under the tranny rather than the side like i did. Had to remove plastic cover to get to it.

So i haven't been driving the car yet since i changed the ATF. I went to check on the fluid level today to see where it was, and saw that it was above the upper mark. This is while the engine was still cold. Before i attempt to fix the fluid level, i just wanted to check to see if this could be correct/incorrect etc. I filled 2.9 US qt according to the 2007 RL service manual. Would the fluid level go down if i let the engine run to operating tempature?

Completely off topic, but can anyone spot which post the computer chose the thread tags from?

Need to check while car is running, not just warm.

After filling you have to start the engine, go through all the "gears" while car is standing still, let it warm up and check the fluid level.

I overfilled mine last time with about 1/8" showing above the mark--engine off but at operating temp. Tech said no damage long term.

To be safe I took it in and had them adjust it--which they did for no cost.

If it was filled until the fluid ran out the fill hole(the one you thought was the drain hole, in your first post), it should be fine. If you poured through where the dipstick is, you had to leave the fill hole bolt off while refilling, so you would see when the fluid runs out. That way, you can't overfill by mistake.

Off topic, but how did all your stuff get to be a golden color? Camera issues or a spraycan?

vybzkartel - Are you sure? Because when i overfilled the first time to check what i thought was the drain plug, nothing came out of it. I've been filling through fill hole below the fuse box.

professor - I think that was just the flash from my iphone that made it look gold.

Right now i have it right below the upper mark while at normal operation temp after draining some ATF fluid. Next time I'll try to remember to just check the fluid level as I pour rather than just putting in the exact amount the service manual says.

Nah sorry, I was wrong. Was actually thinking about the rear diff. Filler hole for the tranny is located exactly where you mentioned.

I just double checked my source. If you put in 2.9q in, you should be fine.
