Replacing Differential Fluid

Has anyone here replaced the differential fluid? I received a reminder that the fluids should be replaced at 52k miles.

Having it done this morning (B16) service. Currently have 38K miles. They replaced my rear differential not too long ago so I doubt the fluid needs replacing.

Just had my rear differential fluid replaced at 75k + miles today. B16 service light came on. The cost for the differential fluid change was $95 and I had a !0% off coupon which brought the price to $85. I would like to do it myself as I change my own oil etc.... however, you need to have the car jacked up and level.... a lot of work without a lift.

You need a 3 ton jack and a pair of stands. 2.5 ton jack will not work, because it does not lift high enough in rear. Place stands at normal lift points behind front tires, and then level vehicle with jack under center tie down loop just under bumper.
If you do this yourself, you will need 4 new aluminum crush washers, as there are two chambers that hold the fluid. Not much at all. A small fluid pump is key to refilling.

Not yet, but it looks pretty straight forward. There is a drain plug and a fill plug (33 ft lbs) that need to be removed (2 new aluminum sealing washers needed) to change approx .5 quarts of SAE 80w90 hypoid gear oil. (I think that is what my old outboard's lower unit took!)

What brand & type of pump did you use?

just a cheap little hand pump that screws onto the top of the oil container. 7 or 8 bucks at walmart or napa. Looks like the top of a handsoap dispenser with a length of hose on it.

When my RL was 6 months old they topped off the Rear diff fluid. Before that I complained of a slight vibration when accelerating from standing still with moderate or heavy throttle. Topping off the fluid fixed that issue. Thus it's probably worth the $95 to be safe.

just a word of advice to who ever changes the rear differential fluid themselves that make sure you drain and REFILL BOTH chambers with adequate ATF fluid. if not, it'll cost approx $3000. to replace the rear diff on the RL.

If you don't have the proper jack and stands, it might be worth getting it done, but otherwise its a piece of cake- its not like Acura is going to assign one of their master techs to do this for you!

Yep, I mentioned that in post 9- be sure to use new crush washers!

What is the Honda or Acura part numbers for the differential crush washers? Are they the same as the oil bolt crush washers?
