possible to diy molding?

Like many of you I have this problem with chrome chipping on my front bumper. I wonder if any one painted the chrome molding themselves and how did it turn out? I know you can replace the front corner moldings it at $110 each just trying to save a few bucks.

I don't think you'll be able to paint them chrome again. I've used Duplicolor chrome trim paint before and it's just a shiny silver, not reflective in the least. Some have suggested doing a chrome vinyl wrap but I haven't seen it done.

I was going to try plastidip, but not sure how it would turn out because the chrome is already chipping and cracking.

You would need to clear all of the old chrome off first. Shouldn't be too hard. Seems like the shit just falls off on its own anyway.

yea I thought about plastic dip too but they don't have a chrome option. I just don't want to shell out $200+ on stupid chrome molding and have it replaced next year again. Anyone try putting a clear coat on top of the chrome to protect it?

The lower center molding on my grille is really starting to chip away. Just tried putting a few pieces of silver metalized polyester film over the rough spots and it doesn't look bad for a temporary cover up. The mirror of the silver film is a bit brighter than the trim but in the sunlight it's hard to notice. The tape costs around 15 bucks for 3" X 15 yard roll. If I get ambitious I may try to cover the entire piece with it and see how it comes out. If I do, I'll take a picture and post it.

You would have to google the tape to see who has it. I had a project at work that this tape came in handy for and it was purchased through an industrial supply vendor. The part I used it on is the lower molding #2. It may work for that part but the tape doesn't have the mirror finish of the upper pieces and probably wouldn't work.
My car is 7 years old and I have to question whether I want to spend $50+ for a piece of plastic.

Does anyone know if that piece is just held by clips and can be pried off?

If you really want chrome, buy a new piece. If you want a DIY that doesn't look like , paint it a color. Many options here:

Yea i finally did 2 method ... first i sanded and painted gloss black and used testors chrome spray paint and it turned out pretty silver. Then i tried doing vinyl. I bought Avery chrome vinyl wrap and its somewhat close. Its reflective and would work if I can get the bubbles out from around the corners. Its hard to bend the vinyl keeping it flush. So far both processes are a fail but the Avery chrome vinyl is the closest.
