Rear differential locks up.

What Does it mean if the rear differential locks up. And is it okay to drive without the driveshaft which makes it front wheel drive for now?

Locking differential may provide increased traction, by restricting an axle to the same rotational speed with regard to available traction or differences in resistance at each wheel.

So yes you can still drive the car but our RL is a bit heavy I think you want her locked to avoid transmission damage....

X, be careful! Could you do more damage just by rolling your RL even without the prop shaft connected? I really don't know? The answer to that may depend upon exactly what is "locked up." Also please note, if Heavy or 007 tells you something different from my advice, listen to them and not me.

There would be more to worry about driving extended periods of time with respect to the rear diff without the prop spinning the oil pump inside the diff, but if it's "locked up" you have plenty to worry about there. You will not damage the transfer case or transmission with the prop shaft disconnected. The SH-AWD control unit knows whether the diff is connected so it will just default and operate in front wheel drive.

Definitely need more info.

If the car is in FWD mode, it has sensed an issue in the diff and is avoiding further damage if the issue is real. In this case a A SH-AWD light would be on, and if a battery reset didn't fix, a trip to the dealer is immenent.

If your diff is truly "locked" and you could get power to the rear wheels, going around corners would be a bitch.
