Light Towing RL

Just curious to ask if the new RL has a towing option. I'm reffering to the
hitch in the back of cars. Most cars have light towing capability but not sure
about the RL. I'm talking about towing a light 10' inflatable with a 15hp motor.
Whole shebang probably about 500 lbs.

Towing option?

But the car is capable of towing with a hitch added. Probably 1000 pounds at the most, so you should be fine.

Like Ken said, nothing from the factory I believe. But sure -- add a hitch and it has SOME towing capability.

Totally agree. If towing option is needed, 05RL should not be the car to do this duty. IMO.

I agree. I ask the question because I need a light tow twice a year to move my 10'
RIB dingy. I was thinking of a removable ball hitch and not somthing permanent.
Who would want to ruin the beautiful lines.

Jeez - its just a car. I find it odd that there would be so much negative emotion about an RL pulling something. My appologies to those who think that enjoying the outdoors with an RL is too "Griswold" for their tastes.

Now that we've gotten the last of our kids off to college, my wife and I would really like to be able to travel with our bikes and kayaks in the RL rather than the family minivan. I got a roof system for the kayaks and I want to add a trailer hitch for a hitch mounted bike rack. Does anyone know where a hitch can be obtained for a second gen RL? I can't find one anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry you received such a negative feeling. Did you check the manual? It should state whether towing is allowed.

I am sure you will be fine, my buddy pulls a Honda Aquatrax 1200 with his TSX. The RL should have no problem pulling your boat.

I've ordered from these guys before.

There are installation instructions there too.
No drilling involved but it looks like you have to cut the rear fascia.

You have the link to the installation PDF? I don't want to be on their mailing list.

I asked about a hitch right after purchasing my '05RL. I wasn't able to locate a hitch. The '05 manual has a whole section dedicated to trailer towing. I ended up with a trunk mount rack for my bicycle. I'm away from home at the moment and don't have the model numbers, but the Thule I bought from LLBean carried my 68cm Rivendell too low...the wheels were in line with the exhausts. I ended up with a Guardian 3 from Saris, which carries the bike way above the exhausts. My bike is a touring model, about 35 pounds, the Atlantis from Rivendell in California...large bike with 27 wheels...not a child's bike. Good luck on finding a hitch. Please post here if you find one.

ummm...make that a 68mm bike...it's the largest production bike available in the USA, I believe. In any event, it's a tall bike, and carries OK on the RL with the Saris rack. With the bike mounted, interstate gas mileage will drop from my usual 26-29 to 22.

I might add that having a bike rack mounted on the trunk is inconvenient because the Acura's rear seat doesn't let down allowing access to the trunk. However, the Guardian 3 mounts in such a way that the bike can be removed and trunk opened and closed if done carefully. Hope some of this info is helpful.

No, you were right the first time. That's 68cm. Road bike frames are typically sized in cms as some nominal length of the seat tube.
I must say that 68cm is one gigantic bike though.

I wish some one would put the hitch on their RL and report back how it works with a bike rack. A friend of mine put a similar hitch on his TL and found his rack wouldn't fit.

Sorry to move away from towing, but what roof rack system did you get? I have an '05 RL and am planning to buy a 17' sea kayak later this year, assuming I can find a way to carry it.

Welcome to the forum!

You may want to PM mbl as he/she hasn't been back in quite some time. Or else those with experience in doing outdoors stuff with their RL will post shortly....

Thanks for the welcome, neuronbob. I tried PM'ing mbl but got a message page saying I couldn't access the feature -- maybe he has it turned off? Anyway, I have a couple months before kayak season really gets going so there's still time

Oh, I forgot, to deter forum spammers we shut off PMs for those under 30 posts. My apologies for giving you bad advice.

Yakima makes a roof rack for the RL.

Saris also makes a roof rack for the RL.

Yakima makes a roof racking system with fitments for the RL. I've always had Thule stuff myself, but they don't have a fit kit for the RL.

Thanks for the reference. I will check it out - looks like it will get me what I was looking for.

Sorry to those who tried to reach me. I see that I cannot be PM'd, plus unbeknownst to me, the new spamblocker my daughter insisted I install was blocking my notices from the forum. Growing old in a world whose technology changes every 10 years is a humbling experience.

For what it's worth... check out etrailer.com.
Acura RL link http://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2006_Acura_RL.htm
I just bought and installed a hitch on my wife's Sienna. It was pretty quick and easy to put on.
Just for kicks I looked up the RL while I was on the web page, and yes you can, it's a Class 1.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm trying to figure out if there's a way I can tow a small u-haul trailer behind my RL for a cross-country move. My only other option would be using a Mazda 5, whose owners manual says to never tow a trailer. This would just be for the essentials I'll need to take with me while the house is on the market and I'm in temporary housing, can't imagine it would be more than 500 lbs. Has anyone tried U-Haul's "sport trailer" (http://www.uhaul.com/Reservations/Eq...spx?model=ST)? Anyone with any experience at all when towing with an RL? I've not decided for sure if I'll go this route, but want to be informed in case I do want to.

I have been searching also this thing, sometimes there is a need to bring my ATV somewhere.
I got a list of original options from Honda dealer and it includes a towing hitch.
It is also mentioned in my cars reg papers that with it you can tow max 1600kg (trailer with brakes) and 750kg (trailer without brakes)
Part # for DETACHABLE TRAILER HITCH
08L92-SJA-600
and for DETACHABLE TRAILER HITCH + 13 PIN HARNES

I did a google on those part numbers and the only things that came up were European sites, for the Legend. I guess that makes sense, since you Europeans are less likely to have pickups and more likely to have a small trailer to tow behind your car.

I went through U-Haul's site, and it looks like it would be about $350 to get a hitch installed. That's more than I was hoping (plus there'd still be the cost to rent a trailer), so I think I'm going to drop the idea and figure something else out.

Yes, i think that Eu part # are somehow different, we have still lots of those pickups and big 4x4`s what to use for towing.
Quite many here have small trailers to haul some sh*t thou.

Here is the thread you need. The pertinent information starts at post 14. Curt hitch, $160-180.

I saw that, but it looked like most people were using it for a bike rack. Didn't see anyone who had actually towed a trailer.

Just throw a ball joint on there and you should be fine as long as the trailer is balanced.
