HID Fogs install

Hello -

Anyone have instructions on installation for HID fogs? I finally decided on getting the Morimotos and so far the best quote I got for installation is around $150. To me that's a little steep so I might look into doing it myself. If anyone can share some tips that'd be appreciated.

Thanks

Buy h11 HID wiring harness. remove old bulbs. install wiring harness make connections at battery and H11 connector. find secure place to mount ballast. plug in ballast and install bulbs then connect to ballast. did mine solo in 30 mins on my back without jacking up the car or removing front bumper. just lower the splash shield and work at it

^ This, except I couldn't have mounted mine where I did without removing the bumper. I think it is worth the extra effort to take off the bumper.

Either way, you can do it yourself in less than an hour.

Thanks for the response.

Carbon Legend - appreciate the steps. I guess I should have clarified my question, I was more concerned about taking the bumper off and finding a place to mount the ballast.

oo7spy - where did you mount your ballast at? Also, is wiring to the battery difficult?

I just bought a complete plug-and-play kit. No wiring to the battery was necessary. I too removed the bumper so I could mount the ballasts on the bumper support.

My kit didn't have a battery cable, but I did have to run a signal cable from the battery area to use them as DRLs. No issues there. Just make sure your cable won't get caught in any moving pieces.

As for the mount, when you remove the bumper, there are styrofoam blocks attached to the frame/chassis. I mounted the ballasts next to the blocks.

Hi - we know I'm vehicularly challenged. LOL!

Does this mean HID's are something brighter than those goofy yellow "bright" lights my 05r has because those are not nearly bright enough for my tastes.

They really do need to be brighter lest I run off the road. So these HID's are brighter?

The fog lights in the RL are useless for driving in anything but fog. They do not throw far up the road but they do give you near and wide vision. the lower the color temperature the better for use in fog. If you increase the lumin output of the fogs then near objects will be proportionately brighter and this will increase the contrast ratio to the parts down the road and you will be able to discern even less.

The obsession with trying to go from "yellow" to the white/blue look is only for the people who failed physics in high school or for "posers".

i got the HID in my fogs also, I am running 2500k (the really gold/dark yellow color). it works very well during snow/fog days and i think it looks nice overall as well.

i was lazy and zipped tied everything so i didnt have to remove the bumper and just the splash guard.

I bought my kit from a member here, eyi, used. It is an "Xtreme HID Slim Ballast" kit like the one linked below. It came with 6000k, but I will change over to 4300K someday. I haven't decided if I want to retrofit a projector in the fog housing or not.

The Retrofit Source is widely regarded here, or at least in Car Talk, as one of the better vendors. Since I know they use Morimoto, I would venture to extrapolate that their products are good too.

Wow dude. You are like the most smartest guy on this whole forum. Congratulations.

Maybe some of us don't drive in fog.

LOL... come on, guys, let's play nice.

While I don't have anything against guys who like the fogs to match the headlights I just prefer the white/yellow look. I've seen people with matching headlighs and fog lights and I think they look just fine. It's all preference.
