Intermittent Air Conditioning

It's been really hot in Toronto recently a full week of temps above 32c/ 90 F. So if driving around town A/C is definitely a must. I recharged my AC 2 summers ago and then I went to my West Coast home and left the car parked for almost 2 years. Since getting back I've had many small and not so small issues. This past week of having needed the A/C consistently I noticed it’s blowing hot most of the time. Sometimes it’ll blow cold for 10 minutes other times, the entire trip, if the outside temp is cooler than 28c/ 82F.

Sometimes if I turn the AC off when I’m finished a trip it’ll work when I turn it on the next trip. Sometimes if I turn off Auto or Recirc it’ll blow cool for a few minutes before blowing hot again.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Fill it with freon gas to be sure.

I also recall a compressor has a clutch that the mechanic used to insert a rod to reach it, and press on the clutch to rub away all residue and rust so as it sticks when the compressor turns. Parking the car for 2 years will cause that.

I would check the electro magnetic clutch which is on the outside of ac pulley. It sticks to the pulley when energized and compressor starts spinning and refrigerant is circulated in the system. Sometimes the clutch wears out, or there is too much gap. There is a rubber insulation between two parts of clutch which dampens the vibrations. In my case the rubber cracked and the clutch wasn't spinning or it would spin intermittently. So i ordered a new clutch from ebay and it fixed the ac issue. Of course you wanna check the relay, fuses, ac fan relay, pressure test the system. Just reach to the ac compressor clutch with car off from top or through wheel well and try to spin by hand.
